In the 1970s, it was decided that Fort Worth, TX, and other neighboring towns would benefit from a nuclear power plant. Squaw Creek Reservoir was dammed in 1979 to create a supply of water to cool the power plant, and the reservoir took an excruciatingly long two years to fill to capacity. Once filled, the plant was activated. Once the memories revolving the Three Mile Island accident in 1979 faded, the reservoir was opened to the public for aquatic recreational activities.

Shaped like an extremely spiky arrowhead, Squaw Creek Reservoir covers around 3,200 acres. There are many nooks and covers in which boaters can retreat for peace and quiet. The shores are heavily lined with cottonwoods and other hardwoods, obscuring homes and buildings that are set back a fair distance from the lake. Boating is popular year-round, and parking can get competitive in summers. Once the peak season passes, the activity on the lake ebbs to the point where it’s easy to find solitude under the bold Texas sky. Five boat ramps invite people onto the water for fun. Fishermen can expect to catch channel catfish and largemouth bass, which is especially good. The state also stocks Squaw Creek Reservoir with smallmouth bass, shad, and tilapia.

Gone with the Wind Museum, made world-famous by the movie and book by the same name, is in Cleburne, TX. Though it’s far from Georgia, the museum displays several of the original props, costumes, other items used in the movie, and memorabilia, including the famous Twelve-Oaks green and white frock.
