Balcones Distilling was named one of the country’s best whiskey distilleries by USA Today , and their facilities are open to visitors and offer tours and tastings.

Fortunately, though, you won’t have to go too far to find some great outdoor activities. For something close to town, check out Cameron Park. It’s one of the state’s biggest municipal parks and has a number of hiking and cycling paths, as well as a disc golf course. Also nearby is Lake Waco; the city’s namesake lake offers swimming, boating, and fishing opportunities, as well as hiking and cycling around its shores. Brazos Park East is also not far away, and although the park isn’t very big, it has scenic views over the river, boat ramps, horseshoe pits, and a disc golf course. You might also want to check out the Waco Mammoth National Monument. This National Park Service-managed museum offers tours every half hour to teach visitors about the Columbian mammoth fossils that have been discovered there. Learn about the dig site there and the painstaking work conducted by paleontologists to uncover the fossils.
