One of the biggest draws to Sand Hollow State Park is the Sand Hollow Reservoir, where visitors can enjoy boating, swimming, and fishing. Another draw to Hurricane, Utah and Sand Hollow State Park are the massive dunes of Sand Mountain that sprawl across the horizon. Many of the park’s 20,000 acres encompass land patrolled and maintained by USDI Bureau of Land Management, but RV camping at Sand Hollow State Park is allowed.

Book an RV in Washington County and plan a weekend getaway, or spend a few weeks exploring and staying at Sand Hollow State Park. While visiting the park, take some time to stop in and see the sights in St. George, only a 25-minute drive to the west. Sand Hollow State Park is situated about five hours south of Salt Lake City, where you can find a rental RV and travel around Utah to take in its natural beauty.

Getting Outdoors

Sand Hollow State Park is the perfect place to bring your off-highway vehicles or all-terrain vehicles. The park features about 15,000 acres of dunes from Sand Mountain, so visitors can spend the weekend riding through the park and over the dunes for loads of fun. Camp in an RV near Sand Hollow State Park so you can get an early start and beat the crowds to the dunes. Guided ATV and OHV tours are available that will take you through the backcountry of Utah and over Sand Mountain.

RV camping at Sand Hollow State Park allows you to spend some time at the Sand Hollow Reservoir. This is one of the largest reservoirs in the state, and visitors can bring their boats and other watercraft for fun on the water. Swimming is also allowed in certain places. Water safety is encouraged as there's no lifeguard on duty at the park.

Horseback riding is another favorite pastime at Sand Hollow State Park. There are specific trails for horses in addition to multi-use trails. When using multi-use trails for horseback riding, be considerate of hikers and bikers. A trail guide is available at the park office. Camping with an RV at Sand Hollow State Park and your horse is allowed in specific areas; just remember to reserve your space early.

Camping at Sand Hollow State Park

State park RV campgrounds are a great place to unwind and spend some time in untouched wilderness. Sand Hollow State Park has over 60 sites available for tent and RV campers. Of those, 39 come with full hookups, while four offer water and electric. An additional 15 sites are primitive. Rigs up to 60 feet long are welcome at the pull-through sites here.

If you don't find state park RV camping appealing, you can always check in to the St. George/Hurricane KOA. This KOA offers full RV hookups and can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet long. Wi-Fi and cable TV are included when you camp at this KOA. Modern restrooms and showers are also available to campers.

Stay in Hurricane at the Willow Wind RV Resort if you can't get a campsite at Sand Hollow State Park. Pull-through spaces are available for longer RVs with 20, 30, and 50-amp service. Modern restrooms and shower facilities are conveniently located for all campers. Laundry facilities are also on-site next to the restrooms.

Exploring the Area

While visiting Sand Hollow State Park, make a plan to drive 45 minutes east to Springdale and visit Zion National Park. This was the first national park in Utah and has amazing sandstone cliffs colored pink, red, and cream. You can hike through a narrow slot canyon and snap awesome photos of the scenery around you, or take a unique selfie to share with friends back home.

Head over to St. George and visit the St. George Temple, a temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The temple was finished in 1877, becoming the first temple of the church in Utah. The picturesque temple and surrounding grounds are breathtaking, and visitors are welcome to snap photos of the outside of the temple and walk around the grounds. However, only Mormons in good standing within the church are allowed to enter the temple.

If you're touring various parts of Utah, you must stop into Salt Lake City for a day of shopping and sightseeing. Sign up for a trolley tour of Salt Lake City and enjoy fantastic entertainment and treats along the way. The show-tour is led by actual theatrical performers who will keep you in stitches throughout the entire tour. You'll have plenty of opportunities to snap great photos of cathedrals, mansions, and even mountain views in the distance.
