Getting Outdoors
As the great glacier of the last Ice Age retreated north, it gouged great hollows into the tender earth, forming what would later become lakes and ponds dotting Vermont. If Lake Dunmore were drained, it’d reveal the havoc that the glacier wrought: a three-mile-long jagged chasm. Though Lake Dunmore is a natural lake, its levels are controlled by a small dam, which in turn supplies water to the nearby town.In addition to native fish (bass, pike, panfish, and several others), the lake is stocked with lake trout and landlocked salmon. The shade trees and aquatic life makes for an ideal habitat for these fish. Trophy-sized catches are not uncommon.During summers, fishermen are joined by other adventurers seeking fun on the water. The 1,000-foot-long sandy beach invites games of volleyball, Frisbee, and swimming. A boat launch allows for easy access to the lake. Sail, kayak, or zip up and down the lake in jet-ski. Nearby Branbury State Park operates a boat-rental service, too. Branbury State Park has a few miles of hiking trails, many of which connect to other trails in the larger park, Moosalamoo National Recreation Area. There, over 70 miles of hiking trails meander up and down the slopes of Mount Moosalamoo, across open meadows, and through dense, hushed woods. Famed poet Robert Frost habitually roamed these woods as he mulled his next poem; follow in his footsteps. Search for waterfalls, shy creatures, and exotic birds that soar high overhead. When winter rolls around and soft, deep snow blankets Vermont wilderness, the fun doesn’t stop. Ice shanties and shacks pop up on the ice sheeting Lake Dunmore. They provide shelter to stalwart fishermen who desire a fresh string of fish for supper. Near the towns, the laughter of children and ambitious adults ring out on a clear, sunny day as they frolic on the ice, engaging in games and races.
Camping at Lake Dunmore
In mid-state Vermont, RV campers have narrow mountain roads to navigate, and they often lack a safe place to pull over for an overnight stay. It’s often wiser to find a campground that can accommodate an RV rental. There’s plenty of options to choose from if you want to camp at Lake Dunmore. With over 36 RV sites to choose from, many of which are waterfront, camping at Branbury State Park is an attractive prospect. Restrooms with flush toilets and coin-operated showers are a short walk from most sites. Take note: although dogs are permitted in the campground area and on the nearby trails, they are not allowed on the beach.Kampersville Campground is a family-friendly facility. With full or partial hookups to choose from, the RV campground is set partially in the woods. The lake is just minutes away from most sites, however. The facility also offers fun activities for children, a rec hall, and a swimming pool.Alternatively, Waterhouses Lodging, Campground and Marina is situated on the western shores. Watch dawns peek through the trees on top of the mountain range to the east from the comforts of your RV rental. The facility has several partial-hookup sites. As an added bonus, the marina makes accessing your boat a simple process. There are boats available for rent, too.
Exploring the Area
Hit the road in a rental motorhome and join the other vacationers on the annual pilgrimages to witness the mountains transform from a velvety green to a blaze of gold and ember red. Middlebury, VT, has a “five-mile trail” of vineyards, breweries, cider mills, and distilleries, all of which have delicious food to go along with these alcoholic beverages. Many facilities have a kid-friendly area to accommodate families. Woodchuck Cidery is wildly popular with both locals and visitors alike. In addition to the tours of its rolling orchards, the cidery has over 20 flavors on tap for guests to sample (and a handful of non-alcoholic options for children). Which one will become your favorite?Vermont is well known for its antique stores. The warehouses and barns housing decades- and centuries-old antiques is an easy way to add some vintage charm to a home. Explore these old structures, many of which date back to the founding of this nation, and walk the small towns’ historic districts, too.
The van worked perfectly for my son and I on our weeklong ski roadtrip around New England. The van is well outfitted for any ski trip with all needed amenities . We like to overpack on winter roadtrips and were pleasantly surprised that the van was already outfitted with everything we could have needed. The heater worked flawlessly, even with overnight temps dropping to -5F. The rear slide out stored held our 4 pairs of skis(largest were 185 cm with 118mm waist) and a grain scoop shovel for digging out, if needed. The 120v outlets and supporting solar panels made it easy to run boot dryers overnight. The van has a sink, stove, and refrigerator for all kitchen needs. We found ourselves actually looking forward to hunkering down in the van during breaks and after skiing. We had several snow days during the trip and the 4wd(w/ burly tires) performed well and didn’t feel noticeably different than my truck in winter driving conditions. This van helped make for an amazing winter adventure. We highly recommend Rob’s Van for any trips during any season. We hope to rent it again for another trip next winter!
