You can start your trip by heading to Fairy Stone State Park, a cultivated outdoor recreation area with a human-made lake adjoining the Philpott Reservoir. The lake is an ideal place for canoes and kayaks, rowboats, and paddleboats. The park has approximately ten miles of trails, most of which are multi-use, allowing hikers, horseback riders, and cyclists; the remaining trails are pedestrian-only. The park has a beach where you can swim, but swimming is restricted to this beach alone, which may or may not have a lifeguard on duty. Rocky Knob Recreation Area was originally settled in the 1800s by families who farmed corn and raised pigs as well as hunted to provide for themselves; this lifestyle was interrupted by the arrival of industry in the late 1800s, causing the locals to become dependent on the industries. Many of them later relocated elsewhere, allowing nature to reclaim the land. Native trees, delicate ferns, and wildflowers have reestablished themselves, and the wildlife population of fox, deer, bobcat, and other species have moved back in. Today there is a well-used campground in the park and many miles of hiking trails that vary in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Shenandoah National Park is a hiker's mecca, with trails exceeding 500 miles in combined length. Some of the trails make for good day hikes, but part of the trail system also belongs to the Appalachian Trail; this section is more than 100 miles long. Other sections of the trails can lead you past waterfalls and other scenic areas such as peaks with panoramic views and interesting geological formations. Stay long enough, and you will also witness canyons, meadows, and historical areas. Some areas of the park have lodging, dining, and shopping facilities in case you need a break or simply want to pamper yourself a little bit.
