Squilchuck State Park is situated in the heart of Washington and covers 249 acres. Established in 1952, this state park is filled with firs and ponderosa pines. During the winter, the park is a sought-after spot for snowshoeing and skiing thanks to the abundance of snowfall in the area.

The land was first settled by Native Americans before it was used in the 1900s for farming. Eventually, the grounds were turned into a state park. Squilchuck State Park is about an hour away from Yakima.

Getting Outdoors

You’ll discover quite a few things to do outdoors while at Squilchuck State Park, and one adventure is hiking. The park is packed with trails that will take hikers through thick forests and meadows. While hiking, you might also get views of the nearby mountains. Some trails that might be of interest to explore include the Squilchuck State Park Loop Trail and Clara Lake and Marion Lake Trail. The pathways vary in their elevations, with some being easy to walk down and others being a little more challenging.

Another thing to do at the park is birdwatching. Thanks to the thousands of trees inside the state park, it’s a favorite nesting spot for a variety of species. A few birdwatchers might see while here are goldfinches, coots, geese, and fulmars.

For those who visit Squilchuck State Park during the winter, you can go cross-country skiing. The park often sees a large amount of snow during the winter, making it a prime spot for this sport. Its hiking and cycling trails are converted into skiing pathways, and there are a handful of steep terrains for you to ski down.

Camping at Squilchuck State Park

Exploring the Area

If you’d like to explore the surrounding area with your camper, you’ll discover plenty of interesting places nearby to stop at. About two hours away in Richland is Red Mountain. This natural landmark towers over the city at 1,411-feet and is a popular spot for hiking and mountain climbing. During your visit, you might also come across one of the area’s many vineyards that grow grapes to be made for various types of wine, including Merlot and Syrah.

In Seattle, there’s the Museum of Flight. First opened in 1965, this museum celebrates everything related to flying. This museum is believed to hold one of the largest collections of air and space artifacts in the world. While here, visitors will be able to see a handful of different aircraft and exhibits that highlight topics relating to aviation. The Museum of Flight also has a flight simulator, virtual reality room, aircraft restoration building, and 3D theater that plays flight and space-related movies. The museum is open year-round and tickets are required to enter although discounts are available.

Visitors can also head over to Ellensburg to check out Dick and Jane’s Spot. This art gallery is situated outside a private home and showcases works by over 40 artists, most of which are made out of bottle caps and reflectors. Visitors can take a tour of the grounds to view these unique pieces of art and meet the homeowners who made this art gallery possible.

In Spokane, stop by Manito Park. The park was established in 1904 and features five major garden areas, including a massive Japanese garden. While touring the grounds, visitors will not only be able to see stunning plants but wildlife as well, especially waterfowl. Manito Park has a small cafe where you can grab a bite to eat while looking out at the gardens.

Squilchuck State Park is near many gas stations that are only a few minutes away. There are a few restaurants, most of which serve comfort food. If you’d like to have more options with your meals you’ll need to travel to a nearby city. Some snacks and dishes this area is known for are mushrooms, coffee, cherries, and cedar-plank salmon.
