Central Wisconsin is comprised of a pleasant mixture of gently rolling hills, patches of forests, and deep blue lakes. When you book an RV in Dane County, you’ll be able to enjoy this part of Wisconsin, and while renting an RV in the area, be sure to check out Crystal Lake. This lake is located in the imaginary triangle formed when you draw lines between Wautoma, Westfield, and Princeton.

Crystal Lake has a surface area that is over 500 acres large. Because the maximum depth of the lake is a mere nine feet, the temperature of the water is extremely dependent on the seasons. The lake is popular with many locals and tourists in the area for a variety of activities. Motorhome camping while working your way through all that Wisconsin has to offer is a unique and exciting way to see America’s Dairyland.

Discover Crystal Lake

Getting Outdoors

Wisconsin is quite well known for its enthusiastic outdoor-loving citizens, and while visiting the state in a rental RV, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy Wisconsin’s natural features. At Crystal Lake, you’ll have access to not only fishing, but swimming, boating, and hiking too. There is a public access boat launch that makes it easy to get your boat in and out of the water free of charge.

Fishing at Crystal Lake is a relaxing way to spend your day. Since it is a public lake, you’ll have to have your fishing licenses up to date, so be sure to get that sorted out when arranging the details of your RV rental. The most common type of fish in the lake is panfish, so expect these to be primarily what you catch. Largemouth bass can also be found in the water, but they are typically less prevalent.

After taking a dip in the water to beat the hot summer heat, head over to the Mecan River Pine-Oak Forest State Natural Area. This hiking destination is less than a few miles from the southeastern shores of Crystal Lake and is a fantastic place to stretch your legs. There are a variety of trails to explore here, many of which differ in difficulty to offer a fun experience to all guests. It is easy to hit the trails early in the day while you are camping at Crystal Lake, and enjoying a sunrise hike is an invigorating way to start your day.

Camping at Crystal Lake

One of the major perks of traveling in an RV is that you can stay near your destination, and this is true while RV camping at Crystal Lake. There is a campground located on the eastern shores of the lake that is extremely accessible for lake visitors. Lake of the Woods Campground has over 300 total sites, so even during the peak of the season, there is still a good chance that you’ll be able to secure a spot.

Lake of the Woods Campground has a large number of amenities to offer guests, including shuffleboard, a swimming pool, a small restaurant, mini-golf, restrooms with flushing toilets and hot showers, a laundry facility, and even boat rental. There is a BBQ area, basketball and tennis courts, a billiards room, and even horseshoe pits. Wifi is also available in certain parts of the campground, in addition to pull-through sites with full hookups.

Exploring the Area

Although some tiny towns exist near Crystal Lake, one of the closest towns that has a decent selection of attractions to explore is Wautoma to the north. This town isn’t huge by any means, but it certainly has a fair selection of restaurants to explore at your leisure. There are family-style diners, burger joints, buffets, pizza places, and more. Wautoma is also home to a few gas stations, making it easy to find fuel for your RV without having to go too far out of your way.

While in Wautoma, be sure to check out the Waushara County Historical Museum. This museum showcases a lot of local history and is a wonderful place to visit when seeking out information about the town. Also in Wautoma is the McComb/Bruchs Performing Arts Center, which puts on daily, weekly, and monthly shows throughout the year.

Another neat town to explore when you rent a camper near Crystal Lake is Westfield, which is southwest of the lake. This town is a similar distance away from Crystal Lake compared to Wautoma and also has some local restaurants to enjoy. If the Waushara County Historical Museum didn’t sate your desire for local knowledge, head to the Marquette County Historical Museum to learn even more about the area.
