Medoc Mountain State Park is located in North Carolina, just over an hour northeast of Raleigh the state capital. Despite the name, it’s not actually a mountain, and the highest point is only 325 feet. Medoc Mountain is the remains of a once-massive mountain range that has eroded over millions of years.
The mountain was named Medoc after the wine region in Bordeaux, by the landowner Sidney Weller, and there were vineyards on the land until the early 1900s. In the early 1970s, the land was acquired by the state, and Medoc Mountain State Park was created.
Less than an hour south of Medoc Mountain State Park is the nearest large city of, Rocky Mount, which could make a perfect shopping stop on route to your RV rental in Halifax County. If you are coming from the north, then Roanoke Rapids could be a good stop-off point.
A creek flows through the Medoc Mountain State Park, making fishing a popular pastime here, plus there are around ten miles of hiking trails, ten miles of bridle trails and nine miles of mountain biking trails. Canoeing and kayaking are also possible on the creek while picnickers are well catered for with tables and grills.
For those that are into folklore and paranormal, it’s claimed that Bigfoot has been seen in the Medoc Mountain area.
