Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is located in the town of Henderson, about 50 miles north of Raleigh and 106 miles south of Lynchburg. At this 50,000-acre reservoir, you'll also find a fair bit of history. For instance, before the reservoir was built, the regular flooding of the river used to be wonderful for farming, benefitting both the colonists and the Native Americans.

As you might be able to expect from a state park that surrounds a lake, there are numerous water activities that you can partake in, ranging from swimming to fishing and boating. Getting Outdoors

Most of the recreational activities at Kerr Lake State Recreation Area revolve around the water. If you'd rather stay on dry land, you can still enjoy hiking on a few easy trails. Many of the trails are around one and a half miles round-trip, or three-quarters of a mile one way. In fact, most of the trails here are quite relaxed as well. You won’t have to worry about climbing steep hills here. There are four trails in total that wander alongside the lakeshore and are good for the whole family.

Some Henderson campers might find themselves wanting to be near the water. If you bring a boat with you, you can make use of the boating ramps and enjoy the 24-hour access boating experience. On the other hand, if you'd prefer to go sailing instead of boating, you can make use of the winds here as well. You'll want to be careful, as large waves and sudden wind changes aren't unusual. Anglers will be pleased to know that this is one of the best fishing lakes in the entire eastern United States, full of striped bass, largemouth bass, white perch, crappie, and catfish. Swimmers can also get their exercise in while at this park with the many open areas along the shore. Do be advised that there are no lifeguards, though.

Some people prefer being able to learn while at the park, and at Kerr Lake, they're in luck. There are regularly scheduled educational and interpretive programs. This means that you can learn more about the area you're camping in. There's also an amphitheater that you can visit.

Camping at Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

Considering the size of the park and the lake itself, you can rest assured knowing that finding an RV rental near Kerr State Recreation Area is going to be no problem. All of the campsites have numerous RV sites available, all accommodating relatively larger RVs.

Electric and water hookups are available at most of the RV sites. Depending on your site, you may need up to 100 feet of hose if you want to be able to connect to the water hookup, though. Many of the campsites also have the same amenities, which include picnic tables, fire pits and grills, playgrounds, hot showers, restrooms, and dump stations, which means that all of your needs will be taken care of.

Exploring the Area

While you are RV camping at Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, you might find that you want to explore a little bit. If you're in the mood for a bit of a drive, about 33 miles northeast into Virginia’s South Hill, you can explore the Tobacco Farm Life Museum of Virginia. In this part of the country, tobacco played an enormous role in the lives of the early settlers. History buffs will enjoy learning more about just how much impact tobacco farming had on the local community.

People who appreciate animals might find that the Sylvan Heights Bird Park has exactly what they want to see. Although the 72-mile journey into Scotland Neck might not be the quickest journey, being able to see the countless birds is going to make the trip well worth it to someone who loves birds. The park even holds the world’s largest collection of waterfowl.

People who might be interested in some of the historical buildings of North Carolina will want to look at Ayr Mount in Hillsborough. About 60 miles away, this preservation of a classical American home is one of the more modest on the outside. However, on the inside, it's certainly a sight to behold for anyone who wants to learn more about history.

As for the cuisine options near Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, you can expect it to be an interesting blend of seafood and Southern food alike, taking from the rich marine life of the lake and the culture of North Carolina. Henderson also has a variety of gas stations and grocery stores where you can stock up on motorhome camping supplies.
