If you want to try your luck at some wildlife viewing in South Jersey, then head to the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area in Clayton, New Jersey. Here, you may be able to see migratory birds as they make their journey, local birds who call the area home, and maybe even a deer or two. You can also head out on the maintained trails and explore the forest. The place is a well-kept secret, so chances are it won’t be too crowded when you go. Just a quick drive to the east is the Wharton State Forest in Washington, New Jersey. The largest state forest in New Jersey, Wharton State Forest has plenty of opportunities for exploring and outdoor recreation. If you want to “get lost” in the forest, you can head out on one of the many hiking trails that cut through the park. If you’d rather get a better understanding of the waterways, you can get your hands on a canoe or kayak and let the waters whisk you away. If you’re looking to learn a little bit more about the history of the area, Wharton State Forest is also home to the Batsto Village historic site, an industrial center from the mid-18th to mid-19th century. Just over the border into Pennsylvania is the Ridley Creek State Park near Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. At Ridley Creek, you can enjoy the peace and zen atmosphere created by a babbling brook as it makes its way through a lush woodland landscape. You can hike and follow the creek down through the forest, or instead, explore deeper in the woods. If you find yourself traveling to the area in the winter, you can strap some cross-country skis to your feet and head out on the snow-covered hiking trails.
