Miami is a town in Gila County, Arizona, situated on the Pinal Mountain's northeastern slope. It is surrounded to the north, west, and south by the Tonto National Forest. Miami's economy has been and is largely dependent on mining; the town began in 1911 with the opening of a copper mine. The mine was the first to use several of the new mining technologies of its time and continued this practice in 1974 and 1992 in response to the passing of the Clean Air Act. Mining for copper was discontinued in 2015. Miami is home to several noticeable people in the fields of entertainment, sports, and politics; the town is also notable for its five Luten bridges which were considered state of the art at the time of their construction.
