The small, desert town of Boron is found in the state of California between Barstow and Bakersfield along the Barstow-Bakersfield Highway. The town is named for the element boron, which is mined in the town at one of the world’s largest open pit mining operations along with boronic acid. Boron was mostly an empty space until 1913 when boron, borax, and colemanite were first discovered.
