Oro Grande is a town in San Bernardino County, California. It is one of the smallest and oldest communities in the county, beginning as a gold and silver boomtown. Although the Gold Fever eventually died off, the community continued to exist and still has that same energy as when it started out. It also claims fame as having been one of the original Route 66 thoroughfares and is mentioned in the history of Route 66. It was originally known as Upper Crossing and later as Halleck, both names being connected somehow to the railroad that passed through in 1885. It was finally named after one of the first mines in the area.

Book an RV in San Bernardino County and you are ready for an adventure in the high desert area of California. There are a few other charming destinations that invite you to come and have a look. Boron is both a town and an element on the periodic table. Barstow is named after the president of the Santa Fe Railroad, William Barstow Strong. Redlands, famous for its citrus industry and once called “Orange Empire” (it is now called “The Jewel of the Inland Empire”), was literally named after the rich, red soil that facilitated its industry. Ontario was proclaimed a model irrigation colony in 1903 for its innovations which included irrigation practices that set the standard for other communities. Littlerock was first named Alpine Springs Colony, then Tierra Bonita, before finally being named after the first post office which opened in 1893. Your Oro Grande RV rental is your invitation to these places and others.

Discover Oro Grande

The Great Outdoors

Rodman Mountains Wilderness Area is a combination of white mountains, inspiring bajadas, canyon mazes, and eye-catching escarpments. The area is divided in two, from northwest to southeast, by a long mesa formed from a large lava flow. The mountains are a breeding ground for raptors, one of seven in the California desert; golden eagles and prairie falcons also call the area home. Your Oro Grande RV trailer rental is the perfect photography blind from which to capture these magnificent creatures. Park management encourages you to enjoy the area and asks that you help to protect it.

Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness is an undeveloped reserve bearing drastically different environments within a single area. The eastern section is mountainous, rising up to 4,100 feet above sea level and populated by bighorn sheep. The western region is lowland desert with an elevation of 1,400 feet above sea level. Visitors to the desert region will spot desert tortoises, barrel cactus, and smoke trees. The dry Cleghorn Lakes sprout flowers occasionally. There are old tracks you should follow when entering the area, in order to protect the environment. Visitors exploring this area would be well advised to rent a car for this activity.

Angeles National Forest is an urban national forest open to the public for recreational activities. There is an abundance of things to do in the reserve, from biking, hiking, and horseback riding, to fishing and hunting. It is open all year round, so winter activities can also be enjoyed. Guests can camp in the park in tents or RV's and there are also cabins available. Park management operates a visitors center with displays and educational activities.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds near Oro Grande. Most of them are child and pet-friendly, but it is a good idea to call ahead if you have a pet with you. Your Oro Grande luxury RV rental is the final ingredient to turning any of these places into your own private heaven.

Desert Willow RV Resort is a modern RV park with restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and a heated swimming pool. The clubhouse has a kitchen for guests to use, a library, and a billiards room. Individual sites have full hookups, some pull-through spaces, and Wi-Fi.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in and around Oro Grande, both historically and geographically. First and foremost, Oro Grande is a part of the legendary Route 66 and is mentioned in its literature. A good self-guided walking tour could include hunting down famous Route 66 venues (hotels and restaurants) or even taking your Oro Grande motorhome rental for a spin along this hallowed roadway. Folks in Oro Grande are born to improvise and one local landmark is a bottle tree ranch (you won't see this in many other places). The town has a golf course and skate center, art and antique stores, and so much more.

At the end of a long, fun day, there is no better reward than an enjoyable meal shared with your loved ones. Most of the food venues on hand are locally owned and operated, which makes for some very interesting restaurant names (this could even be a game to play with the kids if you have any with you). One Mexican restaurant offers a taco salad with beef, not necessarily an uncommon dish but always enjoyable and well-prepared at this establishment. Be sure to try the fried ice cream for dessert. A popular pizzeria caters to families, has an interesting decor with glass bottle lamps, and large portions for a reasonable price.

Of course, there is always the option of retiring to the kitchen area of your Oro Grande camper rental and throwing something together yourself. Or get takeout to bring back with you. Enjoy an evening meal under a starlit sky, on a restaurant patio deck or on lawn chairs next to your home-on-wheels. What could be better?
