Hugging San Francisco Bay to the south of Oakland, Union City forms part of the Tri-City Area that encompasses Fremont and Newark. It has a rich industrial heritage as a former railroad and steel town, with trains still an important way of life. Union City is framed by rugged hills to the east and wildlife-filled wetlands to the west, making it an ideal destination to rent an RV and base yourself while exploring the Bay Area.

The community was founded in 1950 by John and William Horner who named it after their Sacramento River steamship, “The Union”. It later merged to become the town of Alvarado (which is now registered as a California Historical Landmark) before reverting to its old name when it was incorporated as a city in 1959.

Discover Union City

The Great Outdoors

Union City lies on the edge of the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve, a wetland of salt ponds and marshland along the eastern shores of San Francisco Bay. It supports a diverse number of both resident and migratory waterbirds, such as ruddy ducks, Canadian geese, and Northern shovelers, as well as acting as a nursery for salmon and rainbow trout. Follow one of the hiking trails that lead through its exposed mud flats and tidal marsh habitat or explore from the water while kayaking. You can also visit the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center on the northern edge of the reserve that explores the natural history and aquatic life of San Francisco Bay’s wetland and shoreline ecosystems.

Just to the south sprawls the Coyote Hills Regional Park whose hiking trails afford magnificent views across Union City, Oakland, and San Francisco. The long-distance San Francisco Bay Trail passes through the park and there are a few trails open to horse riders and cyclists for those that want to explore on two wheels. Be sure to stop in at the visitor center where you can gain an insight into the traditional lifestyle of the region’s first inhabitants, the Ohlone Native Americans.

The eastern edge of Union City is marked by the Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Park and Garin Regional Park, which is home to the Heritage-listed former homestead of Ukrainian exiled priest Agapius Honcharenko. Easy hiking trails through the hills offer superb views across San Francisco Bay and there’s a historic apple orchard where you can learn about heirloom varieties.

If you’re a keen angler, then the Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area is the place to head, with both Rainbow Lake and Horseshoe Lake open to the public. They’re regularly stocked with rainbow trout, bass, and catfish, with a boating pier where you can launch kayaks and canoes to explore the water at your leisure.
