Valley Springs is a small town in Calaveras County, California. It began as a stop for those who were trying to get tools and supplies to the gold miners who had joined in the California Gold Rush, as well as for farmers trying to get their products to city markets. In 1885, Valley Springs built its first railroad station, which not only improved the transfer and distribution of products but also supported Calaveras County's tourism industry that had begun with the establishment of Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

The Great Outdoors
The Camanche Reservoir has two areas of interest to visitors, its North Shore Recreation Company and its South Shore Recreation Area. The reservoir is fondly referred to as “the home of the monster fish”; parks employees seed the reservoir each spring with bass and trout, some growing up to eight pounds in size. Fishing boats and kayaks are available for rent, and sandy beaches make this swimming heaven for the kids. The reservoir is 7,700 acres in size and has 54 miles of shoreline; jet skiing and wakeboarding are also popular activities.
