The Great Outdoors

Just south of town are the shores of Lake Ontario, most accessible from the city of Oshawa. If you choose to spend the day on the shores of this Great Lake, you’ll be met with a plethora of options for enjoying your day. You can go hiking along the Waterfront Trail, or rent a canoe or kayak and venture out onto the waters. You can even explore the Oshawa Second Marsh and revel in the biodiversity of the region, all the way from the birds to the various grasses. Spending the day at Lake Ontario can be one filled with relaxation and self-reflection or one filled with excitement and adventure - the choice is yours.

If you’re looking for a bit of a retreat, then head to the Ganaraska Forest on the way to Millbrook. Here, you can go snowmobiling through the forest in the winter, or hiking in the summer. At the Ganaraska Forest Centre, you can take classes about the forest and the importance of understanding and preserving biodiversity and the ecosystem. Get information on the history of the region, such as that of the local First Nation peoples. With over 100 miles of trails, you can use the whole day to explore the beautiful land around you and still not have enough time to see it all.

If you already have an Orono motorhome rental, you might as well get your money’s worth and head up to the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park in Bancroft. About an hour and a half to the north, Kawartha Highlands is the second largest park in Ontario. Here, you can enjoy backcountry canoeing down one of the six highlighted trails. By traveling these waterways, you get to see the Highlands in a whole new light. If canoeing doesn’t sound like your favorite mode of transportation, hiking along the trails can be just as rewarding.
