The town was originally founded and built by the DuPont company to build dynamite factories. The name Louviers pays tribute to a city in France that is the ancestral home of the billionaire DuPont family. The town was heavily dependent on these operations for much of its existence until the 1960s, when the DuPont family relinquished control of the town to the local people, giving control of vital town services to newly formed town government bodies.
