Named in honor of Saint Anthony de Padua, San Antonio was established in 1881 as a Catholic colony by Edmund Dunne. The former chief justice of the Arizona territory founded the settlement from a piece of land he earned as a commission from the Disston Land Purchase. As a result, many of the original colonists had Irish and French, and subsequently, German ancestry.

Close Encounter with the Marine Kind

Carved out of the Green Swamp Wilderness Area, the 5,000-acre Colt Creek State Park is home to dense clusters of cypress trees, large stands of pine flatwoods, and open pastureland. It’s only a half an hour’s drive by San Antonio camper rental yet feels removed from traces of town life. The park is crisscrossed by miles of winding creek and 15 miles of multi-use trails ideal for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. The lakes and other watering holes here attract not only anglers but also a multitude of wildlife like otters, alligators, and wading birds.

Where to Park your RV

There are quite a few places to park an RV rental near San Antonio, FL, given its proximity to Tampa. You don’t have to look far to pull into a welcoming campground for a comfortable stay. More than a dozen campgrounds with RV sites are found within a 10-mile radius, several of which cater to the 55+ crowd. Most of these campgrounds offer full hook-up sites with up to 50 amp service, restrooms, and showers while a few have hot tubs and swimming pools.

Catholic Abbeys, Kumquats, and Big Cats

St. Joseph, one of the surviving Catholic outposts that surround San Antonio, bills itself as the "kumquat capital of the world". But it's nearby Dade City that hosts the annual celebration of the Kumquat Festival held in late January. Rent a motorhome in San Antonio and come to St. Joseph a few days before the one-day event for kumquat grove and packing house tours. Then join the revelry in downtown Dade City on festival day to sample kumquat treats (pies, smoothies, and even salsa), shop for arts and crafts, and view antique cars. It's a well-attended event where you can experience "Old Florida" for one day.

Adam was communicative, arrived when he said he would for setup, the RV was clean and had everything that was expected, and Adam took plenty of time to show me everything I might need to know for the trip. Overall, great experience!
