Sun City is located in Hillsborough County, Florida. It began as “Ross” during the real estate boom of the 1920s, but its name was changed to Sun City in the hopes of building a pseudo-Hollywood venue and suburban neighborhood. A movie studio was built followed by a power plant to supply the studio and streets were named after celebrities in the movie industry. The flood of prospective homebuyers never happened though and in 1932, when the real estate market (and most other markets) collapsed, the plan was abandoned and the movie studio destroyed. The power plant equipment was sold but the building itself still remains today, along with the street signs and one building, Jones Place, that served as a gas station, grocery store, and post office (it was built in 1928). Aside from a few trailers, the community is a ghost town but one with a significant history.
