Getting Outdoors

At the heart of Nine Eagles State Park is a 64-acre lake that provides a scenic backdrop for swimming, fishing, and boating. On hot summer days, the sandy beach at Nine Eagles State Park is the perfect place to cool off. The timbered watershed means you'll enjoy some of the clearest water in the Midwest. When you've had your fix of sun and sand, claim one of the shady picnic spots. Tables and grills make it easy to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

The lake is well-stocked with bass, northern pike, bluegill, tiger muskie, channel catfish, and crappie, so it's deservedly popular with avid anglers. Cast a line of the fishing jetty or launch a canoe or kayak from the public ramp. A dense canopy of oak trees makes Nine Eagles one of the most beautiful state parks in Iowa. Many of the trees are more than 300 years old.

More than nine miles of hiking trails wind through the park and are a fantastic way to stretch your legs and get a feel for the woodland landscape. The three-mile loop around the lake is a family favorite, with gently rolling terrain and beautiful views. There are also six miles of bridle trails to explore, as well as trails open to mountain bikers. Things don't slow down in the winter, when Nine Eagles State Park transforms into a snow-dusted oasis for snowmobiles and cross-country skiers.

Camping at Nine Eagles State Park

The Nine Eagles State Park campground boasts a peaceful setting under a canopy of towering oaks. Sites are spacious and offer plenty of shade and privacy from your neighbors. You'll love enjoying breakfast under the ancient oak trees and spending relaxing evenings around the campfire.

Choose from three campgrounds offering both electric and non-electric sites. There are both back-in and pull-through sites, making Nine Eagles State Park a good option for rigs of all sizes. Bigger sites can accommodate RV rentals and trailers of up to 76 feet. In addition to RV campsites, Nine Eagles offers six primitive equestrian campsites. Some sites are available for online reservation, with others allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Most state park RV campgrounds offer access to flush toilets and hot showers, and Nine Eagles State Park is no exception. There are water spigots in each campground, as well as a dump station for RVs. Dogs are welcome, so why not rent a pet-friendly camper and bring along Fido on your next trip? Additions like a playground and horseshoe pit make Nine Eagles State Park a top pick for families.
