Weston Bend State Park is an important nature preserve, but not just because of its inherent beauty. The area is historically significant and was once the center of a tobacco and hemp industry that put the city of Weston on the map. Unfortunately, the damage caused by the Civil War, a series of town fires, and the shifting of the Missouri River away from the Weston port caused a decline in the city's fortune. Today, tobacco still plays a vital role in the local economy; when you visit the park, you'll see several old barns and an interpretive display that are symbolic of the area's past.

The terrain within the park varies between high ridges and stands of cottonwood, sycamore, and maple trees. The rich soil, due in part to the presence of the Missouri River, helps to create a vibrant natural setting that includes undergrowth and other plants. From one of the scenic overlooks, you can see over and past the Missouri River into the state of Kansas on the other side. You can also see Fort Leavenworth and the bottomland forest that surrounds it, and a panoramic view of the river itself, one of the best views of the river in the state.

Getting Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental near Weston Bend State Park, and you'll be in an ideal setting for bird watching, primarily due to its proximity to the Missouri River. The river is part of a fly zone used by migratory birds in the spring and fall, making the park a perfect setting to rest in before moving on. Renting an RV near Weston will provide you with an opportunity to see these birds in flight. There are also local species of birds that reside and nest in the park, allowing you to engage in bird watching at any time of the year. The park has numerous trails that you can go hiking on; one of the trails cuts through the forest and occasionally follows along the park ridges, providing magnificent views.

Another trail is paved and is designated for hiking and cycling; it follows a creek through the woods and occasionally rises up and over the ridge areas. Along with the overlooks, one of which is ADA accessible, there are picnic areas where you can stop and enjoy a meal amid the splendor of the park. The picnic areas are secluded, offering you a quiet and serene setting that is perfect for families. If you are planning a larger family event (or any large event), there are open shelters that can be reserved.

Photographers will have a field day here, enjoying the opportunities afforded by the rich landscape, the wide-open views, and the presence of wildlife that may occasionally appear. The park is open year-round, and the four distinct seasons give the park a variable appearance and personality whenever you are here.
