This small town is located on Mount Desert Island, which rests in the Atlantic Ocean, just offshore of the mainland portion of the state. The town shares the island with the acclaimed Acadia National Park. The nearest larger city, Bangor, is around 45 miles to the north, while the state's capital, Augusta, is around 100 miles to the west.

Thanks to the nearby national park, as well as other natural areas (not to mention, the nearby ocean), outdoor activities abound in this region. There are also museums, gardens and historical sites available for you to explore. There are plenty of unique shops and restaurants in town. Being that it's Maine, and so near the ocean, seafood, and primarily lobster dishes, are a local delicacy.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

When you book an RV in Mount Desert, you will have numerous outdoor activities available to you. Acadia National Park is one of the primary draws nearby. The park offers miles of hiking and biking trails, including former carriage roads (these are not open to motorized vehicles). Please note, some of the trails require strenuous hikes along the sides of cliffs, so those with a fear of heights may wish to speak with a ranger before attempting them. Also, during the summer months, several of the trails have lengthy closures due to their nearness to Falcon nesting grounds, please abide by all trail closures. Wildlife sightings and panoramic views of the surrounding ocean are also available at these unique, park grounds.

The Sieur de Monts Spring is a nature path found in the park. This easy walking trail offers boardwalks and a flat hike around the nearby springs. This is a area is a prime spot for viewing fall colors on the nearby trees. The site is actually enclosed under a dome, which helps to protect it from the weather.

Echo Lake Beach is found near the park. It features a swimming area with lifeguards, be warned though, the water is cool here in the North Atlantic, even on the hottest days of summer. The site provides scenic views of the nearby mountains. Picnic spots and hiking trails are also available nearby.

RV PARKS

Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA is open the middle of May through the middle of October. The site is located directly off the main road that leads onto the island, so it shouldn't be hard to find. As it is located on the west side of the island, this is a prime spot to view sunsets! The park offers all the usual amenities, as well as easy access to Acadia and the free shuttle that can help connect you to any attraction you want to see around the island.

There are several campgrounds available throughout Acadia National Park. Reservations are recommended as this park is very popular in the summer months. There are a few campgrounds that offer first-come-first-serve sites, but they fill quickly, so be prepared. Most of the campgrounds can accommodate RV's, though the amenities offered are often rustic as the Park Service tries to keep these areas as natural as possible. Please call for information on each, specific campground.

Bar Harbor campground is located on the east side of the island, in Bar Harbor. The site is open during the summer season and offers a heated pool, electric hookups and a bathhouse. Reservations are not accepted at this park, so you may wish to call first to check their current availability. EXPLORING THE CITY

There’s many attractions available near Mount Desert that people of all ages will find enjoyable. The Somesville Historical Museum and Gardens is also located on the island. The museum features the history and fishing culture of the local area. The gardens offer footpaths (including a charming bridge) for walking and enjoying the various flowers that are on display. One is the Park Loop Road, which circles the perimeter of Acadia National Park, providing expansive views of the surrounding landscape as well as opportunities for viewing local wildlife. There is also Thunder Hole, which is known for the thunderous sound heard when the tides come in and crash against the sides of the cliffs. A boardwalk is available, though it does close at times of very high tide.
