Discover Vinalhaven RV rentals for memorable road trips

One of the largest islands in the Penobscot Bay, Vinalhaven is a scenic island community about 12 miles from mainland Maine. Vinalhaven’s primary source of income is derived from the lobster industry, and it holds the rights to the largest fishing areas in the bay. In fact, Vinalhaven is a major supplier of lobsters to large cities, including New York, Boston, and Portland. In addition to the seafood industry, Vinalhaven is a significant granite quarrying center and provides stone for houses and buildings all over the country, including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Church of St. John the Devine in New York City, and the Washington Monument. Today, the town has many abandoned quarries that serve as swimming holes for tourists and locals. While you can only access Vinalhaven via an hour-long ferry ride, you’ll love the rest and relaxation (and fresh seafood) you’ll get when you book an RV rental in Vinalhaven.

The Great Outdoors

Lanes Island Preserve is a 43-acre conservation area accessible via a stone causeway. The preserve boasts 1.3 miles of nature trails across rolling coastal shrublands and ragged, rocky shorelines. Head here with the Vinalhaven campervan rental and marvel at a variety of wildflowers or sit back and observe waterfowl, including common eiders and Atlantic puffins. From 4,000 B.C. to colonial times, the island was home to Native American villages, but for the past ten years, the island, located near the mouth of the Royal River, has been a part of conservancy efforts.

RV Parks

Because of its isolated location, you won’t find very many RV parks in Vinalhaven. However, there are several that can accommodate your motorhome rental. Vinalhaven is not too far from Rockland, where you’ll find Megunticook Campground. There are primitive sites, sites with partial hookups, and sites with full hookups. While here, you can enjoy a seasonal swimming pool, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, and a playground. For your convenience, there’s also a laundromat and a bathhouse with hot showers. Watch for playful porpoises, soak in spectacular views of Penobscot Bay, or enjoy a local community event when you book an RV rental in Vinalhaven, Maine and stay at Megunticook Campground.

Exploring the City

You’ll have the opportunity to visit several lighthouses when you rent a motorhome in Vinalhaven. One lighthouse is Browns Head Light on the island’s northwest corner. Commissioned in 1832 to facilitate the transport of granite, Browns Head Light marks the popular seaway between Vinalhaven and North Haven. Though the grounds are open to the public, the lighthouse and the dwelling are closed. Nevertheless, it’s a great place to visit and soak in views of the area.

Booked this camper for my parents to join us on our trip to Acadia National Park and we had a wonderful experience! Greg was great with communication and more than happy to deliver, set up, and pick up the camper once our trip was over. Would 100% rent again and I highly recommend!
