William Tucker is one of the first, if not the very first settlers in the Harrison Township area. During a Chippewa raid in Virginia, his parents were killed, and young William was kidnapped. The tribe took him up to Lake Erie where he resided for many years. Eventually, William was accepted into the tribe. At 18 years old, his adoptive family encouraged him to return to the White Man world, and William obtained work as a guide and interpreter at Fort Detroit, MI. William was a double agent; he frequently would protect the local Native Americans or warn them away while doing the same for the British troops. The Chippewa Native Americans, in return for William’s bravery, rewarded him with a portion of their hunting lands. This land, upon which William built his home, is now a small Air National Guard Base on the northern end of Harrison Charter Township. The home was built in 1784, and it’s purported to be the first residential home built in Michigan (though this claim is in some dispute). The Tucker home is still standing today.
