Originally a wide river, Intermediate Lake was dammed in 1900, which was one of the first sources of hydroelectric power in Michigan. The power plant supplied electricity to a nearby town, Bellaire. Although this plant was decommissioned, the state maintains the dam because the lake is a popular recreation spot for fishermen and other people who enjoy aquatic recreational fun. Prior to damming, the river had a few large islands upon which there were a few buildings constructed, including a dance hall and a couple of restaurants. Though they have been submerged for decades, the foundations of these buildings can be seen on a clear day.
