Discover Portage Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips

A glacial lake in Michigan, Portage Lake, was formed around 10,000 years ago when a mile-high glacier retreated north, gouging out shallow lakes and ponds. Though it was officially discovered by European explorers in 1837, Anishinaabe Native Americans fished and swam in the lake for generations prior. It was known as “O-nek-a-ma-engk," which roughly means singing waters. At one time, Portage Lake was fed by a fast-moving stream that bounced over large boulders deposited by the glacier.

Getting Outdoors

Though the small town of Onekama snugs up against the shore, much of Portage Lake’s coastline is untouched. Tall hardwood trees, lush shrubs, and wild grasses crowd the banks, occasionally making it difficult to navigate the lake’s perimeter on foot. The oddly-shaped lake covers around 2,100 acres in surface area, and at its deepest, is about 60 feet. The water is exceptionally clear, and fish can be observed swimming about as far as 15 feet down. Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish, including but not limited to bullhead, crappie, smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, sunfish, and perch. A couple of paved boat launches makes accessing the water a breeze. Fishermen can also try their luck from a fishing pier. Portage Lake is a regular site of bass fishing tournaments, too.

Camping at Portage Lake

Skip enduring noisy neighbors at hotels and RV camp surrounded by wilderness. Though there are no campgrounds on the lake, there are several options within 20 miles radius. Coho Bend Riverside RV Resort features full hookups, free WiFi, and a catch-and-release pond for children and beginner fishermen. Well-behaved pets are welcome here.

Exploring the Area

Slide into a motorhome rental and join the other gawkers on the coastal scenic byways. The long, rugged coastline is lined with sandy brown beaches, islands, and lighthouses. Out of all of the dozens of lighthouses, Point Betsie Lighthouse in Frankfort is one of the most famous. It’s said to be one of the most photogenic lighthouses in the state. Located on a stretch of coast with high cliffs and rocky outcropping, the quaint red and white structure stands sentinel, waiting to guide boats away from the dangerous coast.

This camper was perfect for our wedding, it was a nice place for the kids to stay. Toni and Jeremy were awesome with the delivery, set up, and pick up. The camper was immaculate and the basics were supplied. Definitely would rent from them again! Thank you!

Delivery on time, even early, and set up quickly. Friendly people who provided clear explanation of systems. Camper was older but clean and necessary camping items were included and available for use. We were unable to convert kitchen table to bed so could not make use of one sleeping area. All in all an excellent first Outdoorsy experience.

Our second time renting a camper from Winston, and everything was great! This camper is very nice and spacious, equipped with all the essentials you could need.
