A few miles from the border of the United States and Canada in the northeastern tip of Minnesota lies the Cascade River State Park. Located in Lutsen within the vast Superior National Forest, this state park has the towns of Schroeder and Grand Marais for its neighbors. This park is an excellent choice for lovers of the extreme outdoors due to its remote position on the map and the rugged, rocky terrain. What are you waiting for, search for an RV in Cook County and cure your wanderlust the way you know best, hopping from one campground to another as you go camping with an RV.

Originally called Cascade River State Wayside, the park rests on the northern shores of Lake Superior, a perfect place to set up camp when exploring the region. Being hours away from Minneapolis which is the only big town in the area, you’ll have to come prepared so ensure you counter check your packing list. Ardent adventurers might find the very remote Isle Royale National Park quite interesting, but the trails at Cascade River and Finland State Forest are quite a spectacle. Get ready for some state park RV camping and experience what makes this place enthralling.

Discover Cascade River State Park

Getting Outdoors

Unlike the southern part of Minnesota, the northern part of the state is a massive playground for outdoorsy folks like you. If you were to hike or even bike through the region’s network of trails, it would take years if not a decade. Speaking of trails, Cascade River State Park is full of them. In two to three hours depending on your hiking progress, the trail will lead right to the top of Lookout Mountain and back down. Judging from its name, the views from the top of the cliffs are spectacular.

What pulls the crowds here is the magnificent waterfall system. If you’re just passing by in a rental motorhome at Cascade River State Park and time isn’t a luxury, take the Cascade River Lower Loop which leads to the series of five waterfalls after a short half-mile hike. If you’re unsatisfied by the short hike, the Lake Superior Shoreline trail offers over a mile long of fun on the lake’s shoreline, making its way past a couple of picnic sites suitable for a family day out.

The great thing about this park is that during the winter, it is totally a new experience. The extensive trails turn into pristine cross country skiing terrain. If you’re a photography aficionado, you might have noticed that due to its remoteness, it is a perfect night sky photography area. The nearest big city, Duluth, being about two hours away, offers almost no light pollution.

Camping at Cascade River State Park

When you get your hands on an RV rental in Lutsen, you’ll probably be camping at Cascade River State Park. The mixed pull-thru and back-in sites are fitted with electric hookups only and can support a vehicle and trailer combined length of 35 feet. There is a dump station, and water can be found about half a mile away from camp. Despite being heavily wooded, the campground is almost impossible to miss as it sits just off Highway 61.

Some of the extra features include picnic tables, fire rings, and rustic vault toilets. If you’re looking for a good old fashioned campground, this is the place to be. Since there is a part of the campground with completely no hookups, why not challenge yourself by trying out some boondocking. When hunger comes calling, there is a restaurant, just a short walk away.

Exploring the Area

The park is interesting, but soon you’ll get used to it and start seeking out cool stuff to do in the surrounding area. During the summer, the area is a bustling golf destination thanks to its few but spectacular courses. The Superior National Golf Course, for instance, offers 27 holes of flawless fairways and gently sloping grounds. It’s no surprise that it’s named the number one golf course in Minnesota by the Golf Digest Magazine.

Who said that you have to travel to the Arctic Circle to experience the magical Northern Lights. With the correct timing, you’ll get the chance to catch a glimpse of the wonderful phenomena right from the comfort of your rental RV during winter or late fall.

Arouse your inner child by sparing some time to hit the Alpine Slide. If you thought the only fun part is the slide, you’re wrong as it is preceded by a leisurely chairlift ride to the top of the Eagle Mountain. What follows is a sled ride down a thrilling half mile full of twists and turns. If you’d like to feel like a Formula 1 driver, rip through the turns as fast as you can. You’ll not get a chance to take in the scenery, but at least your heart will be pounding in excitement.
