Discover Soudan Underground Mine

Soudan Underground Mine is located within the Soudan Underground State Park and is a great spot for a motorhome camping trip. Located in the Vermillion Range, Soudan Underground Mine is in the town of Soudan in Breitung Township. Not too far away from the state park are the cities of Eveleth, MN, and Hibbing, MN. Camping with an RV gives visitors a chance to explore the mine, along with the park’s other recreational offerings. The park is located on the south shore of Lake Vermillion, and while the highlight of the park remains the Soudan Underground Mining tours, the lake is another big attraction with great fishing and boating. The state park is run by the Department of Natural Resources and is also a National Historic Landmark. Another highlight is the Soudan Underground Laboratory that continues to function as a working lab, running projects and experiments. Camping at Soudan Underground Mine State Park gives you access to this lab during the mining tour.

Renting a travel trailer is a convenient way of getting around the area, and you’ll find a range of affordable RV rentals in St. Louis County.

Getting Outdoors

First things first, sign up for a mining tour when you go RV camping at Soudan Underground Mine. As Minnesota’s very first iron ore mine, you get to explore, in-depth, the life of a miner as you travel half a mile underground; jump into a rail and explore the very last and deepest area that was mined down. The 1.5 hour-long tour is the highlight of the park.

There are other tours available too, like the Walking Drift Tour, where you descend into the mine to search for geological clues, educational and group tours, and science tours.

Anglers have ten miles of shoreline to make the most of when fishing in Lake Vermillion. Cast a line into the lake for walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskie, crappie, and lake trout. If you’d rather fish from a pier, there’s a fishing pier located at the Armstrong Bay day-use area.

Put on your hiking boots and explore the trails in the park. The visitor center offers maps with information on trails through the park. A popular trail is the Hiking Club Trail that’s five miles long. Beginning at the visitor center, the trail goes past the Soudan Iron Formation, by several wooded areas, and along the edge of discarded open mine pits.
