Scenic State Park is aptly named, as it is one of the most picturesque in the state of Minnesota. It was established in 1921 to protect the virgin pines along the shores of several lakes. It offers a scenic slice of nature for those wishing to escape their busy day to day lives and take a look at the wild side of Minnesota. The virgin white and red pines are particularly beautiful, but there is plenty of flora and fauna to be experienced all through the year.

The park sits in the center of both Coon and Sandwick Lakes, both of which offer plenty of recreational activities, and the George Washington State Forest is also next door. There are many nearby towns worth exploring such as Grand Rapids, Hibbing, and Virginia. There is so much to do in the area, and it is no wonder that so many people search for an RV in Itasca County to help them start their outdoor adventure.

Discover Scenic State Park

Getting Outdoors

The most visited part of the park is the beach and picnic area. The rolling sands are perfect for a family day out, with facilities nearby and a great spot to get into the water on a hot day. Alternatively, there is plenty of shade, making it a good place just to sit and relax. There is a large picnic area at Coon Lake which is particularly popular, with the enclosed picnic area seating over 200 people if needed on a rainy day.

With six lakes, there are plenty of chances to get close to the water. Fishing is very popular here, and it is a very relaxing place to enjoy the spoils of nature. Lots of people rent a camper near Scenic State Park for the fishing experience. There is a sizable fishing pier that overlooks Coon Lake, and you are able to rent fishing kits from the park office, so you don't have to worry about bringing your own. There is a chance to catch Northern pike, walleye, panfish, and bass, but if you have no luck, it is lovely just to bob around and enjoy the surrounding landscape.

There are also a few trails around the park, including boardwalks that allow you to get close to the lakes. The Chase Point Trail is one of the best for seeing the lakes. The trail was once a river channel that flowed beneath a glacier. However, it is well above the water today, leaving behind a stony ridge which is now covered in birch and pine. Overall there are 14 miles of hiking trails around the park, many of which have interpretative signs along the way which explain the parks history, geology, and wildlife. In winter, the entire park opens up for snowshoeing, although the state park RV campgrounds are shut at this time.

Camping at Scenic State Park

Camping at Scenic State Park couldn’t be easier. The campground is available from April through to November, with 93 drive-in sites and 21 pull-through sites with electricity. There are also group Scenic State Park camping facilities which accommodate up to 60 people.

There are a few campsites to choose from. In the Lodge Campground, there are only two sites that have electric hookups, and the sites are quite narrow. It is for this reason that many campers head to Chase Point Campground. This campsite also has another added benefit of being close to the lake, offering access to the beach and docks while also boasting some great lake views. Both are equipped with modern facilities, including clean bathrooms and separate showers for men and women. There are plenty of options for renting an RV nearby.

Exploring the Area

The International Wolf Center is located within the state park itself, so definitely shouldn't be missed if you are a fan of local wildlife and their care. Visitors have the chance to have a close encounter with these majestic creatures, and they play and tussle. There is so much to learn and explore in this large attraction, such as the 6000 square foot wolves and humans exhibit where you can experience the history of wolves come together before your eyes through displays, video games, artwork and more.

The biggest nearby town to Scenic State Park is Bigfork, and here you will find a number of shops, restaurants, and bars to enjoy just a short drive away. In addition to these amenities, there are also a number of things to do in the city, making it a great place to get a Bigfork camper rental.

Additionally, the town of Grand Rapids is also worth exploring, a short drive south of the park. See the many exhibits in the Grand Rapids Arts Museum, entertain the kids at the children's Museum or just check out the downtown area as the options are endless.
