Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Schoolcraft State Park is less than 30 minutes away from Grand Rapids, MN, and Deer River, MN. Dense pine forests and lakes draw in visitors who want to escape the concrete jungle for a couple of days. This state park was named after Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who charted the Mississippi River with the help of the Anishinabe people and camped in this area during his quest.
The 225-acre Schoolcraft State Park is a great place for a motorhome camping trip. The state park is quiet and secluded, allowing campers to relax and engage in various outdoor activities. Hiking, birdwatching, and fishing are very popular in this part of Minnesota. Those of you who wish to explore Schoolcraft State Park could book an RV in Cass County and start the adventure.
Exploring Schoolcraft State Park on foot is spectacular, and hikers come here from all around the state to enjoy the Mississippi River. The hiking trails are more than 2 miles long, and they pass right by the water, through the gorgeous pine forest. The terrain is not too difficult, and novice hikers will not encounter any problems during their walk. Hikers will pass by a large picnic area and may rest here for a while and listen to the sounds of nature. Once winter rolls in, the park becomes a popular destination for snowshoeing.
Outdoorsy people will enjoy Schoolcraft State Park because it offers serenity in spades, and there are many activities available to them here. With a large picnic area near the river, spend a fun day in the sun and observe the wildlife that resides close to the banks of the river, as well as in the nearby woods. Schoolcraft State Park Campground is a bit rustic, without any modern facilities. There are 28 sites available for vehicles that are up to 40 feet in length. Schoolcraft State Park campers are free to use the nearby boat ramp to launch their vessels into the water.
Unfortunately, no hookups are available at this campground. Campers will find a large number of vault toilets throughout the park. Pets are welcome, but owners need to keep a close eye on them and make sure they are not bothering other campers. Considering that the campground is small, it is recommended that potential visitors make a reservation in advance. They may do so by contacting the park’s office via phone or online. It is important to mention that the campground is closed during winter. Schoolcraft State Park stays open all year round, but camping is available from May to September only.
