Fringed by soft sand and a grassy foreshore, the beach is the main draw at Bewabic State Park. In the summer, locals flock to soak up the sunshine and splash in the shallows. The lake is also a great place to launch a canoe or kayak and enjoy a leisurely paddle. Cast a line and you could reel in perch, bass, walleye, and bluegill. Picnic tables dot the shoreline and are perfect for devouring fresh cherries, homemade pasties, double-baked rye bread, and other Michigan delicacies. When you've had your fill of sun and sand, stretch your legs on the two-mile Bewabic Nature Trail. It winds through the park and takes you through the sun-dappled forest and scenic lakeshore. There are plenty of benches to catch your breath and enjoy the views along the way. Things don't slow down in the winter, when the snow-dusted trail is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Another trail takes you over a CCC wooden footbridge and to a forested island. Thanks to a series of Civilian Conservation Corps buildings, Bewabic State Park earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Most are still in use, including the historic "Wigwam" picnic shelter and log bathhouse. You'll also find well-maintained tennis courts built by the CCC in the 1930s. While Bewabic State Park welcomes most visitors in the summer, fall is a beautiful time to visit. Michigan is famous for its fall foliage, and Bewabic is no exception, with the park exploding in a sea of reds, yellows, browns, and golds.
