Getting Outdoors

Encompassing 25 miles of Peshtigo River, the forest has around 3,200 acres of water for campers to enjoy. For many visitors, that means packing a fishing rod or two and trying to catch a big one.

There are several popular fishing areas to explore in the forest, as well as a number of unnamed lakes and streams that can often serve up a surprise or two. If you want to target muskie, Caldron Falls Flowage is your best bet. If you're after variety, you'll find muskie, trout, walleye, bass, and more at Johnson Falls Flowage. Just make sure you have a current fishing license before wetting a line.

As you'd expect, Peshtigo River State Forest is also a very popular destination among boating enthusiasts. From the peaceful backwaters to several dams along the river, there's plenty to explore — and 16 boat landing areas to help you access the best of it.

If you want to go water skiing or just cruise around on a jet ski, Caldron Falls Flowage and High Falls Reservoir are perfect. However, low speeds are recommended due to the risks posed by submerged obstacles.

If you'd rather get around under your own steam, canoeing and kayaking are also favorite activities here. Rentals are available from several local businesses, with the upper Peshtigo well-known for its whitewater rapids. The Roaring Rapid section well and truly lives up to its name, but it's for skilled paddlers only.

But you'll find plenty more to do in Peshtigo River State Forest away from the water as well. Several trails are open to hikers and skiers — the three-mile Seymour Rapids Trail offers some spectacular scenery — with horseback riding also available. And with more than 35 miles of trails open to mountain biking, it's well worth bringing your bike along for your Peshtigo River State Forest camping trip.

Each site features its own fire ring and picnic table. The sites are just a short walk away from a pretty lake complete with a beach area where you can cool off in the summer months. Canoeing and kayaking are also permitted on Old Veteran's Lake.

And if you'd rather head for a major center, Green Bay is one hour and 15 minutes away to the south. When you get there, spoil your inner history buff with a tour of the National Railroad Museum, home to the world's largest steam-powered train.
