Conveniently located along Route 54, the park is easily accessible from the town of Waupaca, just a ten-minute drive away, as well as the larger cities of Oshkosh and Steven’s Point.

Before it was established as a state park in 1966, Hartman Creek State Park began its life as a fish hatchery that released smallmouth bass into Wisconsin’s rivers. Now, with seven lakes of crystal clear waters surrounded by towering pine, oak, and maple trees, renting an RV near Hartman Creek State Park has become the ultimate lakeside getaway.

Getting Outdoors

Being home to an abundance of pristine lakes, it is no surprise that water-based activities are a popular way to spend time in Hartman Creek State Park. For those that are motorhome camping with their own vessel in tow, head to the eastern end of the park, where you will find Monomin Lake and a useful public boat launch area. Alternatively, take a visit to the Hartman Lake’s concession stand where it is possible to hire canoes and kayaks. Do note that no gas motors are allowed on the lake, to ensure that the tranquility of the park is maintained. There is also a public swimming beach close complete with changing rooms and toilets, should you need a refreshing swim.

Holland Creek State Park offers countless spots for a successful day of fishing. Jam-packed with largemouth bass, perch, and bluegill, anglers can choose from dedicated fishing piers at Allen Lake and Mari Lake, or choose one of the more secluded fishing spots scattered along the lakes’ shores. For those that may have forgotten their fishing gear, the park office provides a limited amount of equipment to those camping at Hartman Creek State Park, and all for free!

RV camping at Hartman Creek State Park provides easy access to the multitude of walking trails here. With ten miles of multi-use trails to choose from, hiking has become a popular activity in the park. Consider completing the Deer Path Trail, a relatively short and fairly flat trail that provides walkers with a wonderful introduction to the native flora and fauna in Hartman Creek State Park. For a more challenging experience, tackle the Oak Ridge Trail. At five miles, this is the longest hike in the park and rewards walkers with magnificent views over the park’s landscapes.

Camping at Hartman Creek State Park

Open seasonally, Hartman Creek State Park camping is possible from April through to November. Those hoping to camp here during the off-season should call ahead, as the campground does open at sporadic times during winter months.

With over 103 spacious and pet-friendly campsites on offer, campers can reserve a site here in advance for a stay of up to 14 days. For those that are not a fan of primitive camping, many of the sites are equipped with electric and water hookups. In addition to this, there are also modern washroom facilities here, complete with hot showers and flushing toilets during peak season.

Consider setting up camp at the Deer Haven Campground, ideal for those that were hoping to camp with a few more creature comforts. Located just minutes drive from Waupaca, the Deer Haven Campground offers campers full hookups for their luxury RV rental as well as WiFi, cable TV, and a modern laundry room.

Exploring the Area

Those with an RV rental near Hartman Creek State Park will also be able to explore some of the historical landmarks that celebrate the area’s rich cultural history. Begin your historical journey at the Holly History and Genealogy Center. Functioning primarily as a research center and depository for local artifacts, the Holly Center opens its doors to the public on select days throughout the year and also offers group tours by appointment, both of which are free of charge. During the tour, visitors can learn about the historical significance of Waupaca through hundreds of artifacts and documents from the last century.

Once you have cemented your foundation knowledge of Waupaca’s history, head down the road to the Dane’s Hall of Waupaca, a building that has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980. Previously used as a clubhouse, auditorium and even antique mall, this manor has only recently been reformed to its former beauty. Call ahead to organize a private tour of this grand building and learn about its history from the very people who have rebuilt it!

For a final stop on the historical tour of Waupaca, take a visit to the Hutchinson House Victorian Museum, which is considered to be one of the most well-preserved examples of New England style architecture in the USA. Open from Memorial Weekend to Labor Day as well as during the summer holidays. This is a must-visit site to catch a glimpse of life as it was in the 1800s.
