Wisconsin Dells is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Midwest. Located along the beautiful Wisconsin River, the area boasts a long list of family amusement parks, wildlife experiences, and outdoor attractions.
There are plenty of accommodation options to be found here, but visitors looking for an authentic motorhome camping experience should head just over a mile out of town to Rocky Arbor State Park. With peaceful wooded surrounds, a one-mile nature trail, and an 89-site family campground, the camp is the ideal spot to park your rig while you explore everything Wisconsin Dell has to offer. Keep reading to find out what to do in the area and how to make the most of your Rocky Arbor State Park camping adventure.
Encompassing 244 acres, Rocky Arbor State Park is a relatively small wilderness reserve. The main attraction here is the excellent family campground, which offers a convenient RV camping spot within easy reach of Wisconsin Dells.
A popular picnic spot, the park also boasts a one-mile self-guided nature trail. It's a pretty walk that the whole family can tackle, and if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and other wildlife along the way. In the winter, the trail welcomes snowshoers.
Hunting and trapping are also available in the park's open areas during designated periods, but Rocky Arbor State Park is best used as a base from which to explore the top attractions of Wisconsin Dells.
For families, this means checking out the best amusement parks the region has to offer. Noah's Ark Water Park, Mt. Olympus Resort, and Wilderness Territory are just a few of the highlights in the area, so there's plenty to keep younger campers happy.
If you're more of a nature lover than a thrillseeker, you'll also find lots to keep you occupied. For example, you might want to get up close and personal with the beautiful deer at the Wisconsin Deer Park, or meet some of the many exotic creatures that call the Timbavati Wildlife Park home.
Sightseers will love taking a scenic boat tour of the Upper Dells and walking through the stunning narrow canyon known as Witches Gulch. And if you'd like to take in some of the best views of the Wisconsin River that the region has to offer, the quarter-mile Wisconsin Dells RiverWalk will be right up your alley.
RV camping at Rocky Arbor State Park is available from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. If you don't have your own motorhome, search for an RV in Columbia County and reserve a site in the park's family campground.
Set amid wooded surrounds, the campground offers a total of 89 sites. Eighteen of those sites feature electrical hookups. Standard amenities include restrooms, showers, vault toilets, drinking water, and an RV dump station. The kids' play area near the campground entrance is a handy inclusion for campers traveling with little ones.
With I-90 nearby, it's worth trying to secure a site as far away from the road as possible. You'll also be glad if you remember to pack some insect repellent before hitting the road, as the bugs here can be a nuisance at times.
If you want to camp at Rocky Arbor State Park with your dogs, the good news is that pets are welcome in the campground. However, you'll need to make sure that your pet is leashed, supervised, and cleaned up after at all times.
When your Rocky Arbor State Park RV camping adventure comes to an end, you won't have to travel far before you find other destinations and attractions worth exploring.
For example, if you want to spend more time enjoying another of Wisconsin's excellent state parks, Mirror Lake State Park is just a short drive away. With nearly 20 miles of hiking trails all the swimming, fishing, and boating you can handle, this park is a top destination for outdoor adventurers.
If you're a military history buff and you decide to head southeast towards Portage, the Portage WWII History Museum is well worth a closer look.
And if you want to head for the bright lights of a major center, Madison is just a one-hour drive to the south. When you get there, make sure you take the time to wander around the beautiful Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
Whether you're after a relaxing nature getaway or an action-packed adventure that the whole family can enjoy, you'll find plenty to entertain and amuse in the Wisconsin Dells region. Rent a camper near Rocky Arbor State Park and start planning the vacation you've been dreaming of.
