Discover Otter Tail Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips

One of the 10,000 lakes that Minnesota is famous for, Otter Tail Lake, is a local favorite, revered for its robust walleye fishing. Currently, the 10th largest lake in the state, Otter Tail Lake was formed around 12,000 years ago as a mile-high glacier retreated north at the end of the last Ice Age. Though the Native American tribes that once resided in this region are long gone, their presence lingers even to this day. Burial mounds and artifacts pepper the countryside. It’s unknown how the lake and river came by their name, Otter Tail, but local lore has it that there was once a large otter population in these waters. Often the only way to spot one was by the telltale flick of their tail.

Getting Outdoors

Encompassing around 21 square miles (roughly 13,725 acres), the large kidney-bean-shaped lake is ringed by dense groves of deciduous trees that act as a windbreak. Water close to the shore tends to be calm and serene. In the center of the lake, it can, however, be windy and choppy at times. On a quiet day, the water can be exceptionally clear, and several aquatic life can be observed swimming about as far as 11 feet down. Fishermen have the choice of fishing from bank, bridge, or boat. They can expect to catch over a dozen different fish. Jumbo perch, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and sunfish are common. Walleye fishing is exceptionally good. The Reel Country Classic, a two-day fishing tournament, is held annually every May on this lake.

Camping at Otter Tail Lake

Skip the thin walls and sketchy neighbors at hotels and wake up surrounded by nature in the comforts of a rental RV. Wake up to birdsong in the mornings and let the sound of waves lapping at the shore lull you to sleep. Though RV camping at Otter Tail Lake isn’t possible, as there are no campgrounds on the shore, there are several options very close by. Consider RV camping at Maplewood State Park. There are over 70 sites to choose from, and several have electric hookups. Bathrooms and hot showers are open in the summer months, and in winters, visitors can use the vault toilets if needed. The facility is open year-round.

Exploring the Area

Hop into a rental motorhome and explore the small towns that dot Minnesota. Many towns have giant statues that stand sentry at the entrance. Otto the Otter just outside Fergus Falls is the mascot for many schools and businesses and even has his own fan website. Pelican Pete, purported to be the world’s largest pelican statue, watches over a babbling waterfall in Pelican Rapids. Not to be left out, Vining, MN, has several unusual metal sculptures in the Nyberg Park. A shortlist includes a watermelon, a coffee cup, and a huge doorknob. In the ‘90s, New York, MN, joined the fray with its own sculpture park. Abstract dinosaur skeletons guard the other sculptures in the park.

Garrett was a wonderful host! He delivered the camper and set it up in no time. He explained everthing about the camper and answered all our questions. The camper itself was awesome and had everything we needed. Highly recommend Garrett and his camper!
