Chilhowee is a city in Johnson County, Missouri, that was established in the mid-1850s under the name “Simpson's Store” after a local merchant, James Simpson. A post office was established there in 1859 under the city's current name, which is a Native American word and has been in continuous operation since. The city is best known for its annual Chilhowee Fair which began in 1948 and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007 with a rodeo, carnival, and a parade plus other events.

The Great Outdoors

Knob Noster State Park was created during the Great Depression with three goals in mind: public access to outdoor recreation; creating employment; and rehabilitating land that had been depleted from agricultural activity. It was turned over upon completion to the state of Missouri around 1946 and today is a popular destination for a variety of activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and much more. Guests can reserve a shelter or picnic out in the open; the park offers interpretive programs and a visitor center with exhibits explaining the park's history and natural features. Visitors can fish for bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.
