Sedalia is the county seat of Pettis County, Missouri; it was platted as Sedville in 1857, then incorporated as Sedalia in 1860. The city grew quickly through the combined influence of railroads and the presence of military personnel during the American Civil War. It began as a cowtown with a colorful reputation, but in time, attracted more and more families, leading to increases in schools, churches, and other conservative establishments. A glider plane base was built to the west of Sedalia during World War II but was later converted to a bomber base named after a Sedalia native who was killed at Pearl Harbor. Sedalia is known as “The Trailer Capital of the Midwest” because of the number of mobile home manufacturers and dealers. It has strong ties to movies and TV shows (including the movie version of M*A*S*H*).
