Camden, New Jersey sits across the Delaware River from the tourist-friendly city of Philadelphia, making it a great place to rent an RV when you’re vacationing near the City of Brotherly Love. While Camden was once a prosperous manufacturing center, many of its residents moved to Philadelphia’s growing suburban areas following World War II. Recent efforts have been successful in revitalizing its waterfront to make it more appealing to tourists.

When you book an RV in Camden, you’ll be visiting a city that’s a bit off the beaten tourist trail. You’ll still find plenty of great places to stay, a vibrant waterfront, and delicious eateries throughout the area. What you won’t find are crowded attractions and A-list restaurants requiring reservations weeks in advance.

Discover Camden

The Great Outdoors

Southern New Jersey is a fairly urbanized landscape, and natural areas can be few and far between. However, one of the best parks in the area, Cooper River Park, is just outside of Camden. This linear park straddling the Cooper River has some fantastic paths for running and cycling with enough shade to make you forget that you’re in a densely populated city.

There’s also the Independence National Historical Park, across the water in Philadelphia, which contains the famous Liberty Bell and Independence Hall where America’s Declaration of Independence and Constitution were drafted. The square mile of parkland is a great place to wander or lounge in its grassy spaces. There are also quite a few museums located nearby when you feel like exploring the city.

Along Philadelphia’s waterfront is the Spruce Street Harbor Park, which is an ideal place to spend a sunny afternoon. While you won’t find a lot of trees or grass here, the boardwalk is a great place to relax by spreading out on an Adirondack chair, resting in a hammock, or playing one of the life-size games that have been laid out.

RV Parks

When you choose a motorhome rental in Camden, you’ll have a wealth of great places to stay that aren’t too far from the city center. One of the closest is Philadelphia South/Clarksboro near Clarksboro. They have lots of amenities including full hookups for your Camden camper rental, a swimming pool that’s open during the summer months, a small pond for fishing, and a dog park where your four-legged friend can get some exercise. The park also puts together a number of activities throughout the week so you can socialize with fellow travelers.

If you’re thinking about visiting Philadelphia when you choose an RV rental in Camden, then you might want to consider staying at the Campus Park and Ride on its south side. They have water and electrical hookups along with a dump station for emptying your tanks. There are also showers and shuttle buses that can take you into the city. While it’s not too big on amenities, you can’t beat the location.

For a more naturalistic setting that’s farther away from the congestion of the city, you might enjoy the Four Season Family Campground in Pilesgrove. There are trees surrounding most of their sites, but they still have all the creature comforts like full hookups and laundry facilities. It’s also within easy driving distance of Atlantic City if you’re up for some gaming.

Exploring the City

The first stop for many visitors to Camden is its waterfront as it has some spectacular views of the Philadelphia skyline along with a few attractions of its own, the most spectacular of which is Battleship New Jersey, an Iowa-class battleship from World War II. You can climb aboard and take a self-guided tour of its facilities including sitting next to one of its 16” guns. If you’re a lover of military history, this is a must-see attraction.

If you’re a poetry fan, you’ll definitely want to check out Walt Whitman’s former home when you get a travel trailer rental in Camden. The leading figure in the transcendentalist movement lived in Camden for the last few years of his life, and his house has been turned into a museum that delves into his fascinating story. The structure has been carefully restored to reflect its condition in Walt’s later years, and knowledgeable staff can answer any questions you have about this titan of American literature.

Camden also has an excellent restaurant scene with loads of great, inexpensive international cuisine (ramen, tapas, Mexican, etc.). There are also quite a few fine dining establishments where it’s not hard to get a table. But don’t worry, the Philly cheesesteaks are just as delicious here in New Jersey and without the long waits you see at many of Philadelphia’s most popular shops.
