Rancocas State Park in New Jersey is often described as a hidden gem. There are plenty of outdoor activities for those looking for a little adventure. Seeing as it is a little off the beaten path, many people chose to rent an RV in Burlington County and camp nearby. Some of the closest towns include Levittown, PA, and Trenton, NJ, as well as the city of Philadelphia, PA, a visit to which can easily be combined within your motorhome camping trip.

The area covers 1252 acres, so although Rancocas State Park is not the biggest park in New Jersey, there is still plenty to do and see. The park was established in 1965 and is located along the North Branch of Rancocas Creek and a large area of freshwater tidal marsh. A section of the park is leased to the Powhatan Indians, where a replica of a 1600s Indian Village has been created.

Getting Outdoors

Like most of the state parks in the area, hiking is one of the biggest appeals to those that go RV camping at Rancocas State Park. There is plenty to explore, with many marked trails allowing you easy access to the varied landscape. Overall, there are 8.2 miles of marked hiking trails to explore, and bikes and pets are also allowed on these routes. Along the markers are QR codes that can be used to help you identify the local flora. In the winter months, when snow covers the trails, they can also be used with show shoes and skis.

Those that are a fan of nature will enjoy a visit to the popular Nature Center, a fantastic place to start and get the most out of your trip. Talk to the experienced guides and see if there are any activities during your visit. When exploring the park, make sure to keep your eyes on the skies, as the area is home to several species of protected birds. The birds that can be seen in the park vary by season, as in the winter you'll see many migratory birds.

Another way to see the scenic, lowland marsh areas is via the water. The park allows for canoe access via the Rancocas Creek Canoe Trail, which is also a prime spot to catch both bass and catfish. The trails and waterways extend far beyond the boundaries of the park, meaning if you are interested in a longer ride, then there are plenty of options for you to explore.

Exploring the Area

The bustling city of Philadelphia is located within driving distance of the park, making it a great place to check out and spend the day. You'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do. A family-friendly attraction that shouldn't be missed is Franklin Square. At Franklin Square, you'll find an 18-hole miniature golf course, designed to feature some of the city's most famous icons, picnic areas, and the Liberty Carousel, which is a tribute to the city's heritage to its carousel making.

If you're feeling brave enough, step back in time into the Eastern State Penitentiary, once home to America's most notorious mobsters. The prison was operational until 1971, and at the time, it was the largest public building ever to be erected. The prison is now a US National Historic Landmark, and taking a guided tour through the building will give you a great insight into life in the prison. It is a fascinating place to visit but maybe best to keep the little ones at home.

Discover life under the sea when you get a Philadelphia camper rental at the Philadelphia Aquarium, home to a huge array of aquatic life, big and small. The venue is home to some more unusual exhibits with more than 8,500 creatures in over 2 million gallons of water. The aquarium is also home to the biggest collection of sharks on the East Coast, which is a very impressive sight. You'll come face to face with stingray, turtles, penguins, and hippos, to name just a few of the animals there.
