The Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site is a memorial to the former first lady and is the only historic site of its kind in America; it is located not far from the town of Hyde Park. Eleanor often referred to it as “Val-Kill,” and it was one of her favorite places, the one she thought of as home.
During its heyday, Val-Kill employed local families in the production of traditional goods; it was also the site of numerous social gatherings for family and friends, political allies, and world leaders. In addition to Eleanor's residence, there is a stone cottage on the property. Camping near the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site will put you within proximity of most of the attractions you're likely to want to see.
Guests visiting the property can visit Eleanor's residence and the stone cottage on select days and hours; the park is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk, with the exception of several holidays when the entire property is closed. You can join a guided tour of Val-Kill while you're here unless the volume of visitors becomes excessively large; in such a case, you can still take a self-guided tour of Val-Kill on your own. Park your RV rental near Eleanor Roosevelt NHS, and you can retire to a warm beverage and comfortable chair once your excursion is done.
Once you've seen everything, there are still more attractions nearby that are worth checking out. Across the Hudson River, Minnewaska State Park Preserve is an outdoor recreational area located on the ridge of the Shawangunk Mountains. Its elevation makes it an important destination for nature observers who will see not only the vegetation within the park but panoramic views of the surrounding area. There are dense hardwood forests, crystalline sky lakes, and clear streams cutting through the valleys below. While here, you can enjoy hiking, biking, and rock climbing, among other activities.
Canopus Beach Complex is a part of Clarence Fahnestock State Park, a prime destination for hiking and other outdoor activities. The lake has a sandy beach where you can swim or sunbathe or both; there are changing rooms with showers and a concession stand where you can buy food and drinks. The beach is open seasonally, and boating and fishing are allowed on the lake; rental boats can be found nearby. Camp in an RV near Fishkill and Canopus Beach will be almost at your doorstep.
Eleanor Roosevelt NHS doesn't have any camping facilities on site, but there is a multitude in the area, making it easy to go camping near Hyde Park. Interlake RV Park is a cultivated campground with a swimming pool, WiFi and high-definition cable TV channels, restrooms and a laundromat, and much more. If you need to stock up on anything, there is an on-site camp store; if you're just feeling lazy, you can skip cooking and head over to the snack bar and grill. If you need anything more substantial, the town of Rhinebeck is not far away, with restaurants to suit your pleasure.
Mills Norrie State Park has a family-friendly motorhome camping facility with primitive amenities (no hookups), restrooms, and showers. It is situated on a lake which you have almost immediate access to and is only minutes away from Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, and Poughkeepsie.
Poughkeepsie is a mid-size city in the Hudson Valley, between New York City and Albany. It is home to several distinct landmarks, such as Vassar College, the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center (located on the campus of Vassar College), Marist College, and many others. Here you will find an elevated walkway bridge that towers over the Hudson State Historic Park and spans the Hudson River. Several operational farms are open to the public and sell fruit and produce, prepared foods, gifts, and souvenirs. The farms' ambiance is nostalgic, making them a good stop to relax and look around.
Pleasant Valley is a medium-sized town with some worthwhile attractions. There are a couple of farms you can visit; one of them raises alpacas, so if you've never seen one up close, now is your chance. There are shopping outlets where you can browse and make purchases, and one of them is a gift shop that sells candles and other gift items. The town has a diverse restaurant scene with both inexpensive venues and fine dining establishments; you can find Asian and European cuisines, bakeries, delis and cafes, and more.
