“Someplace Special” is the motto of Ashland, a small city in northern Ohio, and when you first arrive in town to rent an RV, it becomes abundantly clear just how true it is. The town refers to itself as the “World Headquarters for Nice People,” further adding to its appeal and inviting atmosphere. Ashland shares a name with Ashland County, and also serves as the county seat.
Ashland was first settled back in 1815 but was originally called Uniontown for several years in the beginning. The town’s name was later changed because another town in Ohio already took the name Uniontown.
When you book an RV in Ashland, you can walk around the town window shopping, sampling delicious cuisine, or simply admiring the elegant and historic brick buildings that give the city its own unique charm. Ashland is centrally located between the state capital, Columbus, and the cities of Cleveland and Akron. Even more exciting, the well-known Vacationland region of northern Ohio is not far from Ashland, and one of the most popular places to enjoy summer along the shores of Lake Erie. On top of all that, Ashland loves to party, with a variety of events held throughout the year like Balloonfest and the Fourth of July Parade & Festivities.
Ohio might be a densely populated state, but it certainly places a priority on public spaces, state parks, and camping/recreation areas. Several state parks can be found within twenty minutes’ drive of Ashland, like Malabar Farm State Park. When you bring your Ashland camper rental here, you can see the former home of famous writer Louis Bromfield, a historic farm donated to the state after his death. There are old cabins, cottages, and even an inn at the state park, along with scenic pathways and landscapes. The Heritage Days Festival and the Maple Sugaring Festival are both held at the park, adding to the list of reasons why you should make a pit stop to visit it.
Mohican Memorial State Forest and the adjoining Mohican State Park are practically next door to Malabar Farm State Park, and worth a visit when you rent an RV in the area. Both the forest and the park make up thousands of acres of densely forested land that was once clear cut for the harvesting of timber. This woodlands paradise has since recovered and now protects and preserves a wonderful tract of land where you can go hiking, mountain biking, swimming, boating, fishing, and camping with your Ashland RV rental.
East Harbor State Park is a lovely park to visit when you head up to the Marblehead Peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie. The park is smack dab in the middle of Vacationland, Ohio’s premier destination for recreation and summertime beach days. There is a marina on site with ample space to park your personal watercraft, or head out on the lake for swimming and fishing. There is also a campground with exquisite coastal views capping off an already ideal experience.
Up by the city of Cleveland, you can take a trip to Ohio’s only national park, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, in search of peace and quiet away from the hectic city. The park is smaller and newer than most, but a brilliant place to hike through woods and along rivers looking for hidden waterfalls in heavenly, heavily-forested areas. In addition to its surreal natural beauty, there are also historical and archaeological sites found throughout the park and a visitor center that can help you better understand what you are seeing.
One of the best benefits of booking a campervan rental near Ashland, OH, is that there are tons of RV parks that can host you during your trip. Rustic Lakes Campground has three different swimming and fishing lakes, an in-ground pool, an old-school arcade and recreation room, sports courts, a camp store, and a playground for children.
There are several KOA campgrounds in the area. Homerville KOA campground is a nature lover's dream, with lovely hiking paths and fishing creeks. You can go fishing or opt to swim in the resort’s pool during your stay. Butler/Mohican KOA is located south of Ashland, with many of the same amenities. You can play basketball, volleyball, mini golf, or swim around the pool during the hot summer months.
Ashland is a wonderful place to walk around and is incredibly accessible for pedestrians. The downtown area is full of shopping centers, tasty cuisine, and an assortment of other interesting businesses. There are not a whole lot of famous attractions in town, but the Ashland County Historical Society operates a fabulous museum in the heart of the city that you can visit when you rent an RV here. The society does its best to preserve the history of Ashland County while making the information easily accessible and interesting. The museum operates and owns several historic buildings, like the Noonan House and the Manor House. You can tour these lovely homes and see old photographs, antique furniture, and other artifacts pertaining to the rich heritage of Ashland County.
Akron is quite close to Ashland, and you can easily head there to see some more city sights and landmarks if you still feel like seeing more. The Akron Zoo is a fascinating place to see a menagerie of animals from all over the world. It may be smaller than other major zoos in New York or San Diego, but it has lots of character and beautifully landscaped grounds. There are even events held at the zoo quite frequently, like the Brew in the Zoo Celebration that combines good beer, food, music, and scenery.
Akron Art Museum is the place to see if you enjoy viewing works of art. The building itself is quite nice, with modern style and glass structures adorning the front of the building. The art featured in the gallery is mostly modern art, and has a variety of themed exhibits on display.
