When you ponder lake getaway locations for a nice RV rental rendezvous, Ohio is probably one of the last lake spots on your list. The state may lack vast mountain ranges and deep, mysterious bodies of water, but you can find winding creeks through wild terrain. Found in southeastern Ohio, Salt Fork Lake is a result of impounding Salt Fork Creek. The resulting 2,952-acre lake sits along US Route 22 in Cambridge.

When you are making your outdoor adventure plans, book an RV in Guernsey County, and see for yourself that Ohio is more than the Buckeyes in Columbus and professional athletes in Cleveland. The idea for Salt Fork Lake came about in 1956 when Cambridge was seeking the main water source. After realizing the lake and its surrounding land would be better suited for recreation, the people carefully planned out the area to ensure its ecosystem could sustain natural life as well as some fun. Final completion was seen about a decade later, and, to this day, Salt Fork Lake is still one popular spot to visit.

Discover Salt Fork Lake

Getting Outdoors

Salt Fork Lake is a part of Salt Fork State Park, which is Ohio’s largest state park at 17,229 acres. The vast area rolls up and down hills, winds around trees, and has pockets of water throughout. You can imagine that Salt Fork State Park is quite the natural playground for all who come for a visit. There’s ample hiking for all levels of hikers. Fourteen trails are strategically cut through the park at varying lengths, with some even looping together. You can even find an archery range and a dog park for a safe romping space for Fido.

The rivers are good for a quick dip and some fishing, but the main body of water used for recreation within the park is Salt Fork Lake. Swimming and boating are definitely allowed and encouraged. Higher speedboats are allowed in designated areas marked by buoys for waterskiing and tubing. Salt Fork Lake campers can sit out on the beach to soak up some rays and fully relax.

You may be sitting there thinking that this Salt Fork Lake place sure has quite the activities lineup, but they don’t stop there. The lake acts as a scenic view while you work on your swing. With both an 18-hole course and mini-golf, both the parents and kiddos can be equally entertained by the same sport. Your camper rental lake getaway just paralleled as a golf destination as well.

Camping at Salt Fork Lake

Access to various campsites within the state park makes camping at Salt Fork Lake with your rental RV quite easy. There are over 200 RV sites with various hookups. Choose from only electricity or have the whole shebang with full hookups. With your stay, you also have total usage of the bathroom and washroom facilities, a separate beach for Salt Fork Lake campers, and play areas for the youngins.

Though there are several other campgrounds found within the Guernsey County area, you should let Salt Fork Lake only be part of your motivation to visit the area. There are plenty of more traditional RV campgrounds available that aren’t set deep within a forest. You’ll have basic comforts such as full hookups, game rooms, pools, and green spaces.

Exploring the Area

The entrance to Salt Fork Lake is found in Cambridge though a majority of the park is in Lore City. Cambridge is a nice little Ohio town with a couple of museums for perusing and store-lined streets for browsing. It would be easy to swing through for an afternoon. Lore City is a small one with only 300-400 residents. But, what they may lack in numbers, they sure do make up for in hospitality. While the main draw would be Salt Fork Lake State Park, there are a couple of restaurants and shops to check out. Best of all, both locations are an easy RV rental drive from Salt Fork Lake.

Camping at Salt Fork Lake leaves you just about equidistant from Columbus (to your west) and Pittsburgh, PA (to your east). These two major cities have very different vibes and are perfect day trips for those staying for more than a couple of days. Columbus has been putting modern touches on the city for quite some time now, coupled with being the holder of The Ohio State University.

There are some pretty famous spots here, delicious eats, and fashion-based shopping. Pittsburgh held on to the history of the city and still prides itself on its steel foundation. The Duquesne Incline is the main icon while there are museums, galleries, shops, and eateries galore in the city. Either way, you can’t choose wrong here. Booking your Salt Fork Lake motorhome rental excursion with friends and family, and have an amazing adventure.
