Lewistown is a borough in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania that was incorporated in 1975. It became a crossroads in the late 19th century and was a hub for traffic moving in all directions due to its state-centric location. The construction of the Pennsylvania Canal and subsequent railroads made Lewistown and Mifflin County economic powerhouses until the shift from canal to train transportation of goods saw economic opportunities move elsewhere. Lewistown was severely damaged by Tropical Storm Agnes in 1972 but has since recovered. Today, Lewistown is the 1973 recipient of the prestigious All-American City award for its recovery efforts; it hosts the Pennsylvania State Fire School and has numerous listings on the National Register of Historic Places.
