Alba is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Texas in Wood County. The city is about an hour and a half away west of Dallas. Shreveport. LA is about two hours east, and the town is less than two hours from either the Arkansas state line or the Oklahoma state line. Situated between Oklahoma and Louisiana, Alba sits at an intersection between the southeast and the southwest. Vacationers that rent an RV in Alba are able to drive east to experience the Deep South. Alba was likely first settled in 1843 by a gunsmith named Joseph Simpkins. Simpkins and his family were from Missouri. While it’s not clear how the town got its name, it was likely named after Scotland. “Alba” is the Scots Gaelic word for Scotland.
A few years after its settlement, oil was discovered here. That discovery brought the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroad to the area. The town had several operating coal mines. The Audie Murphy/ American Cotton Museum celebrates the life of Audie Murphy, a WWII veteran and actor. Murphy lied about his age to enlist early in the US Army. He received every commendation one can receive in the US Army during combat. Murphy was born in Hunt County; thus, the museum celebrates him and other military veterans. The museum also focuses on the history of the cotton industry in the area.
The region also has several farms that are open to visitors. Some of them are operational, and others are only for visitors. There are llama and alpaca farms; these are often a big draw for children.
