Dallas-Fort Worth might be one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States, but here in north-central Texas, it doesn’t take too long to get outside the chaos and into the country. The town of Alvarado is only a half hour’s drive from the metro and feels every bit the rural paradise that you would expect from this part of northern Texas.
Alvarado is a small community and primarily subsisted as an agricultural town on the fringes of Dallas-Fort Worth for most of its history. Natural gas was discovered in the area and is intermittently extracted. When you rent an RV in Alvarado you’ll be greeted with vast rolling plains and wide-open skies, with some of the best sunsets you’ve ever seen.
Despite its proximity to the city, Alvarado doesn’t have many public transportation connections with Dallas or Fort Worth. You may need to drive your Alvarado RV rental into the city if you want to visit any of the attractions there.
While small enjoying small town life should be a part of your Alvarado travel trailer rental vacation, the best part of the experience will be the great outdoor recreation opportunities. Pirates Cove Fun Zone is only seven miles from Alvarado and is the perfect place to take the kids on a hot summer day; they’ve got seven water slides and a 750-foot lazy river to keep them cool.
Another place to take the RV rental near Alvarado is Mainstay Farm, a former dairy farm that has been converted into a family-friendly adventure park. Interesting playground equipment, educational programs teaching agriculture, and seasonal events like pumpkin picking and Christmas tree cutting keep visitors coming back all year long. The TexPlex Park has ATVs and dune buggies for rent to use on their motocross track. There are also jet boat rides available in a nearby man-made canal and a shooting range if that’s not enough of a thrill for you.
Waco Mammoth National Monument is only an hour’s drive to the south near Waco and showcases some of the most well preserved mammoth fossils in the country. The visitors center is built around the dig site; many of the bones are still in their original position. This format helps visitors to understand the painstaking methods used by paleontologists to unearth these ancient wonders.
There are a few RV parks just a few miles to the west of Alvarado including ABC RV Park, Stewart’s RV Park, and Rock N’ Robin RV Resort. All have full hookups and could be good choices when you book an RV in Alvarado. Another option is Lake Posada RV Park, five miles north of town on Interstate 35. Laundry facilities, full hookups, and a lake for fishing are all available there.
The nearest Walmart to Alvarado is 15 miles to the west, in the town of Cleburne. This could be a place to park the Alvarado motorhome rental for a night or two, just be sure to call ahead to confirm your stay with store management. If you’re staying on the north or east sides of Alvarado, there are also stores in nearby Burleson and Midlothian. You can fuel up the Alvarado rental RV at the truck stop in Midlothian, as the fuel bays will be a bit larger and better able to accommodate your RV rental.
At one of the local bars and grills, you can find live music with local artists and well-known acts playing. There are popular burger restaurants to visit, too.
Craft beer fans will most likely need to drive a little way out of town to get their hoppy fix, as breweries can be found in Burleson and Mansfield, both about 15 miles out of town. If you’re a fan of fine wine though, you’ll definitely want to make a stop at one of the wineries in nearby Burleson. Knowledgeable guides take visitors through the vineyard before sitting down for a taste of their delicious vino.
After dinner and drinks check out some live theater at the Plaza Theatre Company in Cleburne. They’ve got new shows starting every few weeks and all of them are family-friendly. It’s set up in the Theater-in-the-Round style, so there are really no bad seats and it’s a very intimate experience.
Head 30 miles north into the massive urban spread of Dallas and Fort Worth and you’ll gain access to a variety of big-city attractions. The Fort Worth Zoo houses a wide range of creatures, including lions, gorillas, reptiles, and various bird species. Stop by the Outdoor Learning Theater for a chance to learn about some of the zoo’s inhabitants.
In the midst of downtown Fort Worth, you can escape to the Fort Worth Water Gardens, a stunning and serene collection of cascading water fountains. Stop for a peaceful break in your city explorations and enjoy this architectural masterpiece.
