The settlement was founded in the 1860s by pioneers and by the late 1880s, the town hosted three churches, one school, and a community post office. Before the 1890s, Avalon already hosted two cotton gins and gristmills and the community continued to grow during the early 1900s. Although these factories are no longer operating, you can still take a stroll through these streets and get a feel for this suburban town.

To learn more about the history of the region, or for some shopping and dining, you can visit the neighboring city of Ennis which has two live theaters, several modern coffee shops, and the Ennis Railroad and Cultural Heritage Museum. The city also hosts cultural events throughout the year such as the Autumn Daze Fall Festival, when the city is eliminated by night, and the National Polka Festival, which is held each May on Memorial Weekend. During this three-day event, the city comes alive with concerts, food vendors, and colorful heritage costumes.
