Discover Canton, TX
Serving as the seat of Van Zandt County, Canton is a small city in East Texas that’s famed for its monthly flea market. It was first settled in 1850 by residents of Old Canton in Smith County, with a post office and courthouse established in the same year. The city of Canton was officially incorporated in 1919 and expanded with the development of the Van oilfield during the Great Depression.
But it’s the First Monday Trade Days that have really put Canton on the map, luring hundreds of thousands of bargain hunters every month. The city’s proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth and family-friendly reserves make it an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring everything that East Texas has to offer.
The Great Outdoors
Book a camper rental in Canton and make the 15-minute drive to the East Texas Zoo & Gator Park, a nature reserve and petting zoo that’s home to dozens of alligators of all ages. Watch one of the daily alligator feedings to see their powerful jaws in action, then get up close to the lemurs, zebras, and snow macaques that also call the park “home.” There’s a barnyard with friendly pygmy goats, pot belly pigs, and llamas, as well as kangaroos, peacocks, and sulcata tortoises.
If you’re traveling with kids, be sure to visit Cherry Creek Park, which sprawls on the edge of Canton alongside the City Lake. The children’s playground features unusual equipment, a rock climbing wall, slides, and swings, with a short walking trail where you can stretch your legs. Challenge your family to a game of frisbee golf or settle in with lunch at one of the numerous picnic tables.
Just over an hour’s drive south of Canton near Streetman lies the Big Lake Bottom Wildlife Management Area, which was created to protect a tract of rapidly disappearing bottomland hardwood in the Post Oak Savannah Ecoregion of Texas. It’s traversed by the meandering Trinity River and a birding hotspot due to the numerous species that come to rest and refuel in the wetlands. You can explore the reserve along one of the hiking trails or try your luck at hunting white-tailed deer, squirrels, and rabbits.
Pick up your RV rental in Canton and pull into one of the 100 full hookup sites at the Canton Marketplace RV Park. This completely paved and well-lit campground is situated alongside the Canton Marketplace shopping mall, with laundry facilities and RV storage available throughout the year.
A short drive northwest of Canton is the Rolling Oaks RV Park, which features a range of back-in and pull-through sites beneath a canopy of grand oak trees. Select between their 30 and 50-amp service, then take advantage of the complimentary Wi-Fi and laundry facilities.
Drive in the other direction, and you’ll arrive at the Wagon Train RV Park, which has 25 full hookup sites with 30/50-amp services. There’s a covered pavilion with picnic tables and a community barbecue grill, as well as a dog park where your four-legged friends are invited to roam free.
