Discover Canton, TX
Serving as the seat of Van Zandt County, Canton is a small city in East Texas that’s famed for its monthly flea market. It was first settled in 1850 by residents of Old Canton in Smith County, with a post office and courthouse established in the same year. The city of Canton was officially incorporated in 1919 and expanded with the development of the Van oilfield during the Great Depression.
But it’s the First Monday Trade Days that have really put Canton on the map, luring hundreds of thousands of bargain hunters every month. The city’s proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth and family-friendly reserves make it an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring everything that East Texas has to offer.

If you’re traveling with kids, be sure to visit Cherry Creek Park, which sprawls on the edge of Canton alongside the City Lake. The children’s playground features unusual equipment, a rock climbing wall, slides, and swings, with a short walking trail where you can stretch your legs. Challenge your family to a game of frisbee golf or settle in with lunch at one of the numerous picnic tables.
Just over an hour’s drive south of Canton near Streetman lies the Big Lake Bottom Wildlife Management Area, which was created to protect a tract of rapidly disappearing bottomland hardwood in the Post Oak Savannah Ecoregion of Texas. It’s traversed by the meandering Trinity River and a birding hotspot due to the numerous species that come to rest and refuel in the wetlands. You can explore the reserve along one of the hiking trails or try your luck at hunting white-tailed deer, squirrels, and rabbits.
Pick up your RV rental in Canton and pull into one of the 100 full hookup sites at the Canton Marketplace RV Park. This completely paved and well-lit campground is situated alongside the Canton Marketplace shopping mall, with laundry facilities and RV storage available throughout the year.
