Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is home to the Attwater's prairie chicken, which was added to the endangered species list in 1967. The refuge consists of coastal prairie (which the chickens require), wooded corridors of live oak, sycamore, and cypress trees, and native wetlands called “prairie potholes” for their round shape. The wetlands occur randomly within the coastal prairie habitat.
