Garwood is a small community in Colorado County, Texas, located on State Highway 71. The city was platted in July of 1901 and was named after a lawyer in nearby Bastrop, Hiram Morgan Garwood. A store owner, Ed Frnka, moved his store (building and all) to Garwood, as did a number of homeowners. The Frnka family has resided in Garwood from the very beginning and is considered the de facto town historians. Visitors coming to Garwood would be fooled by the town's highway presence and should watch for a small, easily missed sign stating “Uptown Garfield” (pointing everyone in the right direction).

The Great Outdoors
Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is home to the Attwater's prairie chicken, which was added to the endangered species list in 1967. The refuge consists of coastal prairie (which the chickens require), wooded corridors of live oak, sycamore, and cypress trees, and native wetlands called “prairie potholes” for their round shape. The wetlands occur randomly within the coastal prairie habitat. Visitors can take a self-guided auto tour on the designated auto route only; hiking is allowed along the route, but guests should be cautious of snakes, alligators, and red ants. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and the road is undeveloped; a suitable rental car might be worthwhile.

Overall, we had a great experience with both the host and the RV. Steven was very helpful and accommodating to our vacation needs. The RV itself was well-equipped with all the amenities you could think of, and with the slides out, it felt very spacious. While not a deal breaker, the RV could have benefited from a thorough exterior wash after being in storage and a bit more interior cleaning (wiping and vacuuming). Would definitely consider rebooking for future vacations.
