The mid-sized city of Texas City, Texas sits on the coast of Galveston County overlooking Galveston Bay, just a short drive south of Houston and Baytown. Texas City was founded by three brothers from Duluth, Minnesota on a duck hunting trip in the early 1890s. The three brothers, known as the Myers brothers, saw the possibility for the area to become a prominent port due to its location on the bay and decided to buy 10,000 acres of land in the area, which is now known as Texas City.

This development, along with the Industrial Revolution bringing railway lines to Texas City, meant before long, this was a significant port in the area, overwhelmed by its sudden boom in popularity. Due to its importance as one of the top ports in Texas, Texas City has a long history, some involving the Great Depression and the Mexican Revolution. This history, coupled with the beauty of Galveston Bay and the many nature reserves nearby, means there's lots to discover when you book an RV in Texas City.

Discover Texas City

The Great Outdoors

Texas City is quite a busy city, so you'll no doubt want to escape the hustle and bustle when you rent an RV in Galveston County. Thankfully, as it's so close to Galveston Bay, there are plenty of ways to get out and enjoy some open space. Galveston Bay offers lots of activities for travelers of all ages. You can do as the city's founders did and go duck hunting, with lots of companies offering guide services and organized waterfowl hunts. There are more than enough water-based activities to do too, with everything from kiteboarding to kayaking available. Texas City is very close to Houston, meaning there's no shortage of companies offering activities on the bay.

If you'd rather not get wet, then you might want to explore one of the area's many wildlife refuges. One close by is Brazoria Wildlife Refuge. Situated a little farther down the coast, Brazoria gives its visitors an idea of what the area looked like before humans settled, with its freshwater and saltwater swamps being an ideal place for wildlife to flourish. Brazoria Wildlife Refuge is a bird watcher's paradise, with over 300 species of rare birds either living or stopping over in the park. Visitors are welcome to fish, hunt, or go for a hike, just watch out for any crocodiles lurking in the weeds.

Another wildlife hotspot worth a visit is McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. Hop on a ferry across the bay to visit this park, containing the largest freshwater swamp left on the coast of Texas. With plenty of nature trails, McFaddin is perfect if you're looking for a long hike, with over five miles of dedicated trails to explore. Visitors can engage in fishing or even crabbing if they're looking for something different. McFaddin is also a popular destination for hunters, with over 100,000 mottled ducks living here year-round.

RV Parks
