Information About Moab, UT

A beautiful place for your next RV rental vacation lies in within the heart of the Colorado Plateau, in the small town of Moab, Utah. Moab is on the eastern shore of the Colorado River, making it the perfect place to book an RV in Grand County. Moab also serves as the county seat. Even before the town was officially settled, the location was popular for travelers passing through, as the valley was a great location to cross the Colorado River. As trade increased between Santa Fe and Los Angeles, travelers along the Old Spanish Trail trading route considered Moab a crucial part of their journey, and the town became a popular pit stop by the mid-1830s.

With many travelers passing through daily, one of Moab’s first townsmen, Norman Taylor, decided to open a ferry service in the early 1880s, as there were still no bridges available to cross the river. The county took over the ferry service in 1897, the same year that many other townspeople began efforts for construction of a bridge. Finally, in 1912, a 620-foot-long triple-span steel bridge was constructed, just east of where the modern Highway 191 bridge stands.

Today, when you rent an RV in Moab, you can enjoy a variety of activities. Hungry? Visit the downtown area for a taste of southwestern cuisine while checking out galleries, shops and more. If adventure is more your style, pack up the Moab RV rental and head to the great outdoors and enjoy two national parks plus the cooling waters of the Colorado River. Whatever you love about renting an RV, Moab is sure to impress even the most experienced RV travelers.

The Great Outdoors

Moab is home to two of the most popular national parks. First, the Arches National Park is home to more than 2,000 natural stone arches in a sea of contrasting red rock just five miles north of Moab. Visitors to the park can drive along an 18-mile scenic road to take in the beauty of the rock formations or select one of the various hiking trails for a closer look. The park also offers organized activities including stargazing and other ranger-led programs from spring through the fall each year. Many RV travelers insist that you must check out at least one sunset at Arches while you are here, as the colors of the sky against the landscape is something pictures simply cannot do justice.

Early risers are encouraged to start one of their days with a sunrise viewing at Canyonlands National Park. Utah’s largest national park, Canyonlands is also home to its Island in the Sky district which sits atop a 1,500-foot mesa. Guests at the park can check out four-wheel drive roads that lead into the backcountry or stick to the paved scenic drives that offer plenty of pullouts along the way. If you want to exchange the luxury of your RV rental in Moab for open night sky camping, check out Willow Flat Campground, which is located inside of the park. With only 12 sites available, they are first-come-first-serve and they go quickly. You won’t be able to set up your Moab rental RV in the park, but there are plenty of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and commercial RV parks in Moab, and Canyonlands is only about 30 miles from the downtown district.

RV Parks

With so much natural beauty and various scenic views in the region, it is no wonder that thousands of people choose to rent an RV near Moab. There is also a multitude of options from Monticello to Green River that make great locations to set up your Moab travel trailer rental. While there are no RV hookups available, the Bureau of Land Management offers twenty-six different campgrounds that will accommodate RVs and travel trailers alike. These sites are first-come-first-serve, which means there are no reservations available and you are encouraged to arrive early on the day you wish to rent a site. Also available to campers are picnic tables, vault toilets, and fire rings, just be sure to bring your own firewood along.

Many of the state and national parks also offer campsites, as well as RV hookups. While there are no RV hookups at the Arches, or at Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point does have electrical hookups available. It is quite common for the campgrounds within the parks to have minimal amenities, including not having showers or running water. The upside to taking your Moab motorhome rental to a state or national park is the exceptionally beautiful scenery and a variety of wildlife you often cannot find elsewhere.

Privately owned, commercial campgrounds are also available throughout the region. These types of RV parks tend to have more of life’s luxuries available such as flush toilets, full RV hookups including running water and electric, as well as WiFi and laundry facilities. Another benefit to using a commercial campground for your RV rental in Moab, UT is that they do take reservations, sometimes months in advance. If you are planning to visit the region in the spring, between March and May, or in the fall, between September and October, reservations are strongly advised, as these are the peak travel times in Moab and the surrounding area.

Exploring the City

Take some time during your trip to Moab to take in the city as well. Microbreweries, restaurants and shops provide a local aesthetic to your experience. The city also hosts regular events including a free concert series each Friday night, typically during July.
